Property insurance recommendations.

No idea if I'm posting this in the right place but no doubt it will be moved if not!

My apartment insurance is due for renewal next month and I'm currently using my bank, Caixa.

I'm looking at other quotes, not necessarily for cheapness but quality and so that the policy is in English not Spanish so I can read it!

Who do people on here insure with and, probably more important, which companies are better if it comes to claiming. Any useful comments would be most helpful.

P.S. - I've been recommended Hiscox insurers but when you ring them they simply give you a brokers number in Spain and that's the end of it as far as they're concerned, so really their ad of insuring abroad is not quite true?

Liberty is an insurance people seem to mention a lot and according to friend of mine comes in english as well.

Bank insurances tend to be more expensive than private ones as customers who take out loans or mortgages are virtually obliged to take the bank insurance as well.

Most of the Administrators offices are agents for insurance companies and there are also independant brokers in the port as well. I am currently insured with Allianz through Isobel Raynes office but will possibly change for convenience when it is due for renewal

You are probably too late to change insurers this year - my understanding is that in Spain you have to give insurance companies 3minths notice

The current law is 30 natural days.

Having said that, most insurance companies don´t bother pursuing you if you don´t renew / cancel the policy without advising them first.

In the meantime they obliged to cover you for 30 natural days AFTER it has expired in case there has been a misunderstanding with banks or account numbers etc.

Thanks all for the replies. Caixa bank have now sent me my renewal in English which is great plus it's gone down from €362 last year to €211 for this year. Too good to be true?! I don't know.

No idea what the going rate is for a 2 bed apartment in town?

Yeah!!! good result Nick, not often you hear of prices dropping these day .

Indeed. I'll pop in soon and quiz them a bit but the 32 page document looks fine. Admittedly when I renewed last year it was then Barclays, who Caixa took over, but still a massive difference. Watch this space!

S&C, do you mean as in exchange rate as it's not, even with the slight dip in the euro rate?

Hi jonquet. I'm just trying to get my head around the difference between the two banks in one year. Maybe Barclays are much greedier?! I always thought we were paying a lot with them but sometimes in life you just do what's easiest!

I reckon it´s supply and demand and the internet.

A lot of people shop around and get digital quotes.

I had been using Mapfre for years, but every year the prices went up, even though I was "good" and faithful client (won´t say why, only that I used to spend over 8.000 euros a year with them ).

After spending less than 30 minutes on the net, I am now with Allianz at less than half that price, and probably better service too.

Of course, after I had swopped they came back with a price equal to Allianz´s .

I said thanks but no thanks.
