What's going to happen to all the stumps?

Is the council getting a stump removing machine in?

Please I hope so as they look dreadful. They could then plant the new trees where the old ones were

I read in the TOTN today that the mayor has announced tests will be made to find suitable replacement plants and trees for the palm trees that have been lost to the Picudo Rojo beetles.

Couple of pics showing the capped palms from our balcony last trip, encouraging signs of life from one of them, even flowers appearing.

The town hall has begun destroying 80 palms which have not been affected by the beetle that has decimated so many trees . Even trees on private land that has been affected will have to be destroyed and owners will have 10 days from being issued with an order, to comply or they will be fined up to 2,500€ and be denounced to the environment ministry .

Reading the "Ultima Hora" this morning and it reports this problem is also affecting the trees in Palma, it says that last year 108 trees were infected and so far this year another 173 have been attacked by the "Red palm weevil" .

That's a shame.

There is a very old post that I remember from when the Majorca daily photo blog first started in June 2007, it says '' Palma would not be Palma without its palm trees.''

back in 2007 no one would have ever thought the palms would have to be cut down

they planted tamarisk trees on the pine walk when pine trees were destroyed by the processionary caterpillars, so perhaps that's apossibility

What takes so long!!!!!!!!

The trees have gone and the ugly stumps remain

They can spend all that money on the square and do nothing about the stumps - do they think tourists are blind!!!!!!!!

We have an apartment in Llenaire and what used to be a lovely palm lined road is now just stump road with the odd palm tree as a reminder of how it used to look

people move to mallorca because of the great laid back life style etc. unfortunately, when you come to live here, this attitude extends to things we would like to have done more efficiently. I live here and when I first moved it drove me mad. Now, it's chill out and keep the coronaries at bay. Agree with you about Llenaire, love that part of PP and it looks dreadful at the moment

But they did only remove those trees last week,we have to give them credit for finally taking some action. I agree it looks bleak but lets hope they have something in mind for replacing them.

No the ones on the front have not been felled, but they have taken about 80 down around the port.

We don't live in Llenaire so we're not as chilled as the locals!
But we do own an apartment there so we come out 4 or 5 times a year. Each time we come some more palm trees have been felled. They have been removing trees for ages, months perhaps over a year not just last week! It's so depressing to see, more removed every time we visit

The photo of sws97sdg shows that palms can survive... ! It is important to save palms in Mallorca.

Best wishes,
Catalina
