It's not just the trees though, albeit that they are the lungs of our planet ..........trees also attract all kinds of wildlife including birds.

Including those awful murdering beetles!

The birds are so lovely though and I would hate to see those disappear.

ROFL Debz, it took a while like me with your puppy in the mountain, but eventually the penny drops .

Well - I would be delighted to have my tree back capped or not in any shape or form but it wasn't to be. It's now in palm tree heaven RIP

A big thank you to Project Paul, Project - Professional services in Puerto Pollensa - Home
who yet again come up trumps for us in arranging Jaime to cut and dispose of the tree for us.

Thank you Paul

Just back in the UK and we were horrified to see how many palm trees had gone since we were last out in August - and many more not looking too healthy...Gotmar seemed to have been particularly badly hit but I imagine few if any areas will escape. I just can't imagine what the coast road is going to look like with no palm trees... does anyone know if suggestions have been made as to what might replace them (especially in view of the fact that the PP council has no money!) It's hard to believe that they will just leave the stumps in place with no new trees as the whole character of the area will be changed - not such a problem where there are pine trees but on certain stretches of road there are currently only palms. Without them things are going to look so bleak... not great for attracting tourists.

I wonder if they need to leave them for a while before they pull/dig them up, to let the roots die back a bit?

The loss of the palms is such a shame. Cd it is so sad to witness a tree being cut down. I'm very pleased that I didn't witness the cutting and disposing of our tree. I was upset enough here in the UK just knowing it was happening. I couldn't stand witnessing the disposal. We are not looking forward to going back to the villa and seeing the awful space where my beautiful tree once stood. As for replacing it - well - I have no idea what we will do.
These awful beetles apparently are able to fly long distances to reach their destinations. They also have a great sense of smell. They grow to about 3 inches in length and are red in colour - so I have been told. yek! Certainly I think the gap between our trees disposal and us replacing with something else will be enough time to ensure these horrid things have moved from our garden.

Surely the government should have some sort of compensation in place for those losing their trees. Afterall they have been aware of this problem for a long time and don't seem to have helped at all with controlling the problem. Perhaps a few law suits will shock them into doing something quick before Palma becomes palmless!

I have been pondering on this last post. Unfortunately some of the blame lies with those owners who have not taken the advise offered on how to try and treat or contain the beetle which is as we are all aware a speedy little bug. This said a lot of trees that were treated by capping by the council have now had to be demolished as the disease was obviously too widespread. It is very sad and I realise that for those people who have lost trees it has been both traumatic and costly but put into perspective no one died.
