The chicks seem to grow overnight. And keep their parents busy.

That's what I think - can't believe how quickly they grow!

I couldn't see the wee one at Hochstadt this morning but just had another look and it is under the rest. It definitely doesn't seem as active or thriving like the others. As you say, they seem to grow before our eyes. Their wings are now forming...it's amazing!

Yes, only 3 of the larger chicks now in Roettenbach. I had hoped that at least the 4 larger ones would remain. It could well have been the wet weather that played a role. Fingers crossed for the ones that are there now.

I did notice that mum was struggling to get them under her wings during the wet weather. She had about 6 attempts but there was always one left out in the cold. Just when the smaller ones were catching up a bit! Nature’s cruel sometimes

The forecast is great for the week ahead with more rain on the way, but the 3 are already quite big now, so hopefully the parents will keep finding enough food and the chicks will prosper.

What a wee shame. I did wonder as I had a quick look but couldn't see clearly. Likewise with the other nests, I seem to pick nap time!

Just checked the other 2 nests and two storks on each of these - looking very cold and miserable I thought the storks migrated to warmr climates in winter.

Here is a link (in German - try Google Translate) why a lot of storks either stay out in the winter or only travel as far as Spain, before they return.

Extract from the website:
"As a large bird, the cold hardly bothers the stork, as it can retain heat much better than small songbirds such as tits and sparrows, which always overwinter with us. The white storks only make their week-long journey south because of the food shortage in the European winter .

However, as long as there is no solid snow cover and there is severe, long-lasting frost, the stork can still find enough food in our latitudes such as mice, earthworms, small snails, fish, etc. Only when there is a persistent food shortage do most storks roam further into the large river floodplains or to Lake Constance, where the climate is somewhat more favorable and therefore the food supply is greater. Mike, sounds like me and my summer trips to Pollensa. Old, heavy, looking for food etc.
