Albarino ?.

Hi Smiddy! Don't know if you are still out there or not, but if so could you - or anyone else - check if Jaime has the Alborino wine. I'm sure I have had it there and love it to bits! Have been checking if I can get it in UK, but there appears to be a few different types under the same name. Could you check the lable for me please and see which it is? If anyone else comes across it in other restaurants, would you mind checking also please - probably before you start drinking it and cant see the lable!! Thank you so much.

When we were there May/June he had 3 different Albariños (we went with the very nice Maria Vinyals) on the menu but as far as I remember I don't think the Santiago Roma (which we used to order regularly at O Lume in the past) was one of them.

Just back from 2 weeks in June.

We had 3 visits on this holiday and tried the most expensive Albarino (not saying that expensive always means best) twice from Jamie's list. In our opinion not as good as Santiago Roma.

Jamie has not yet been able to source a supplier for S. Roma but I think he is still trying or least hopes to acquire nearest option.

Good fun trying the others in the meantime!

Certainly having problems finding outlet in UK for the ones / one (no idea which ones I have tasted to be honest - think it was probably Maria Viyals) we have had in PP. I dont really want to start trying others, so may well have to do the bottle in a towel in a plastic bag thing inside the case to bring home!

Aldi - who else - are currently offering as part of their "Exquisite Collection" an Albarino Rias Baixas 2011 @ £5.99. produced by

Bodegas Martín Códax


The name (in the small print, back of bottle) of the producer, ties in with with link above, though the labelling is Aldi's 'own label' so is unlike those shown on the website.

Who writes this stuff?

Aldi's Argentinian Malbec offered at the same price and in the same Exquisite Collection is excellent though as it's from a different country perhaps it's persona non grata on a PP forum.
It is rather good though!!!

noticed in the Times yesterday that the Albarino at Aldis was named as one of the top white wines under ££6

Good find! I just managed to pick up a Bodega Castro Martin 2011 for £7.99 in M&S. Obviously a bit pricey!
Their write up:

"This wine is everything that great Albarino should be. Light, dry and intetnsely fruity, it will set your tongue tingling with flavours of ripe pear, white peach and spicy acidity.. Albarino has quietly" (depends on how much you drink surely!!)" been gaining a reputation as Spains finest white variety and it flourishes in the lush verdant landscape of Galicia..." etc etc "the purity and vibrancy of this wine make it an ideal match for all manner of seafood dishes from seared scallops to octopus, deep fried squid and even sushi."

We shall see!!
