Just wondering if we could get them as seed potatoes in the UK?

Teacu 29-02-2020 19:43

Post #58 mentions variety Lady Christi, and looking, for example, on the Thompson & Morgan website, you can buy this variety of seed potato on line from them. However, whether you can replicate the same taste growing them in the UK might be a bit of a challenge..

The export to the UK and Scandinavia of Lady Christl new potatoes started on Sunday. The centre of this export in Mallorca is of course Sa Pobla, where exporters still have some concerns because of Brexit uncertainties. Joan Mateu, president of Mateu Export, says that "the flexibility has ended, and we must see how the UK will specify requirements from now on". The UK represents 25% of Sa Pobla's potato export market; "it would be a difficult one to replace".

...

This year's export is expected to be "normal". ...
Overall, though, the quality is good and the starting date for export is as it has generally been for some decades.

When the first exports were made, back in 1924, the harvest was in May. Joan Mateu explains that market demand and climate change have brought this forward more and more. The UK is the longest-established market. ...

The climate and the soil create the flavour.....something you could never replicate in the UL, even if you brought the soil with you.

Managed to get some from our local greengrocer yesterday - he has them in every year:):)

A great find today......Mallorcan new potatoes on sale in my local fruit & veg shop in Hedge End, Southampton! £1.90 a kilo if anyone lives near and fancies some (It's the little shop near Nat West Bank in the middle of the village).
No prizes for guessing what is for supper this evening! :)

Second wave ?? of Mallorcan spuds

Huge supply of Mallorcan potatoes suddenly in stock at Great Harwood Tesco.
@ clubcard reduced price of £1 for 750g. Variety: Maris Peer.

"Delicate and Mild" "Freshly harvested from the red clay soils of Majorca"

They seem to be quite small.. but are perfectly formed. ;)

At any other time, seeing these potatoes and description could encourage you to jump on the next plane and spend the Bank Holiday weekend visiting old friends in the hospitality business.

Early harvest boosts demand in Britain.

Mallorcan potatoes have made it to Yorkshire.

Just had a run up to Skipton to visit Keelams farm shop. (keelhamfarmshop.co.uk)
They have loose Mallorcan potatoes on sale. First ones I've seen this year. No indication of the variety but they have a light dusting of Mallorcan soil to prove their authenticity.:)

Keelams seem to be ahead of the main food stores. We have a large Tesco, a modest Morrisons and the usual sized Aldi in the town, but all that buying power and no Mallorcan spuds :(

Our nearest Tesco Superstore (Rainham, Essex) had Mallorca (Lady Christi) potatoes in stock (packaged) at least two weeks ago (and very nice they were, too)..

Mallorcan new potatoes were on sale in Waitrose in Southampton today . Just cooked some up and they are delicious (Maris Peer variety). 750g bag for £1 as they are on a 20% off offer.

I've just done a bit of research about the grower. They were grown by Esplet - the main potato producer and exporter in Sa Pobla, a company that has been around for decades and which first started exporting potatoes in 1924, when they started sending the Royal Kidney variety to Britain.

This company is Mallorca’s biggest exporter of potatoes and is Spain’s biggest exporter of potatoes to the UK.
