The reason that I, & many others, have a fair amount of hand-luggage is that I always put my laptop, camera & jewelry in it as well as some essentials in case my luggage goes astray. Fortunately I haven't ever lost my luggage but I know too many other people who have.

I always carry my laptop & other valuables with me because they often aren't covered by insurance if they are left 'unattended' & there are plenty of stories of theft from luggage.

On top of all the above, airlines have been encouraging people to take hand-luggage only (to speed up check-ins) & some such as Ryanair have started charging for hold luggage.

So it will be interesting to see what happens in the light of the recent security risks.

Having watched through the window, the manhandling of our luggage as we disembarked at Stanstead a couple of weeks ago, I would be very worried about putting valuables in the hold.
Certainly if the rules on hand luggage become permanent, I won't be taking a camera with me in future.

So today we hear that we're allowed to take a small item of hand luggage in now. Okay girls, fill those handbags!

Checked Easyjet website yesterday & they're still not allowing hand baggage from some UK airports, including Gatwick. However, info does seem to change regularly so I recommend anyone to check for updated info at least once daily. Anyone know what the situ is re. duty free? What if someone wants to buy perfume, booze?

Unfortunately for me I'm travelling from the U.S. to PP and ALL my luggage will have to be unlocked - hoping some of the restrictions will have been lifted by the time I leave on Sept 3 as I don't fancy putting most of my valuables in an unlocked suitcase.

Update as of today .... from EasyJet's website.

EasyJet welcomes the downgrading of the security threat level, and with the implementation of the new securiity arrangements across all airports in the UK, the airline has returned to normal operations and has no planned cancellations.
