Question Turtles

I often see turtles in the freshwater stream near the bridge in Llenaire. Anybody know what species they might be ? They are about a foot long in size.

I just did a quick surf on the net and apparently there are "Pond turtles" and "Red eared sliders" in Mallorca as well as sea turtles .

The BBC programme ' Wild Mallorca' showed the Turtles.

When this was on the BBC in HD the picture and sound quality where fantastic

Only in low quality in Youtube unfortunately.
Wild Mallorca - YouTube

You need to be signed in to see it for some reason. ( its only scenery, nature and wildlife so I dont see why it is unsuitable for anyone...)

The Turtles are at about 16:10 minutes onwards, on this link.

Watch it all though as its good, makes me want to be in the mountains on a long walk with my wife

The turtles I saw sound a bit more like the pond turtles that Sparky mentioned above but thanks for sharing this clip Mark as I wasn't aware of this series. I will search you tube later for more clips.

We spotted a turtle sunning itself yesterday. We looked for it after reading this thread!! Thanks.

It slid into the water as we must have disturbed it. It eventually climbed back out as we remained still and quiet.

We also spotted and took a picture of a water snake in the same torrent but a litte downstream along C. Volantina. We watched it for ages underwater weaving its way around the small pebbles hunting for food. The fish seemed unaware of its presence. They were probably too big and fast for it!!

I will try and post pictures when I get home.

Just photographed a baby praying mantis hunting on the balcony!!
What a wonderful world we live in!!

It is indeed a wonderful world! I still get really excited when I see species we don't have in the UK - when I hear the scops owl at night, or glimpse a hoopoe flying overhead - I've never seen a turtle in PP, and like Debz had no idea there were any - will definitely keep a look-out next time we are over!

I agree Kate I love spotting things we don't get in the UK. I had a little bird similar to a sparrow but with prettier markings and a long pointy beak hovering really close to my balcony yesterday. I too love the little scops owls although their precision timed hoot can drive you slightly potty at times In the early hours of this morning something flew over our apartment making a really loud screeching noise. I have no idea what that was!!!

Turtle on the same rock this lunchtime!!

Head up the ringroad to the Llenaire roundabout.
take the road to Pollensa.
Pass the Llenaire Hotel (if you can) up to the bridge over the Torrent de San Jordi.
Look left downstream about 20metres to a large rock in the stream.
You should see the turtle basking in the sun.
If you go down Cami Volantina you can stretch out over the barrier for a view from above.

Good Luck

Debz1 your little bird was probably a spotted flycatcher. I don't know where your apartment is but there are Barn Owls in the Llenaire area and they screech.

Lollipop I've just googled a spotted flycatcher and yes that's what it was. A barn owl sounds about right...we are in Pinaret. I didn't know they had them in Mallorca either, but we get a lot where we are in the UK and that's exactly what the noise sounded like. Thanks

debz if you'd like a closer look their nest is on our blinds, with chicks in it! and I can confirm they definitely catch flies, all day long. nearly had my eye out a few times swooping in and out. The viewing area will be open about 2pm with a small entrance fee.
