New Spanish Wines

If any of you have one of the larger Co-op stores in your vicinity, a couple of wines you may be interested in.

CASA DEL SOL 2004 Sauvignon Blanc/Verdejo,Rueda. (£4-79)
Wines from Rueda are still one of Spain's best kept secrets, very dry and fruity, and I'm told, this is new to the our shores, at the moment on offer at £3.79 and from next week, £4.79. Even at this price it compares very favourably with Waitrose's Palacio de Bornos, and Majestic's Ermita Veracruz Verdejo, both selling at about £6-00 a bottle. I picked up some yesterday, but had to travel to the next town to do so, as our local, albeit small, Co-op store had never heard of it.

To quote Victoria Moore from last Satuday's Guardian, "This is a simple but interesting wine: a fresh unoaked white with citrus and unripe pear flavours that will be lovely if we have an Indian Summer and, to be honest, even if we don't"

Don't know how these wine writers do it, I just know what I like, and if it's white it's got to be bloody cold, dry and unoaked, but apart from that..., what does she mean by "Unripe pear flavours"?

VINAS DEL VERO 2004 Chardonnay-Macabeo, Somontano.(£3-99)
One doesn't come across many wines from Somontano, although I seem to remember Sainsbuy's stocking something similar. This is very dry and pleasant, if not with the same full flavour of the Rueda, and the Co-op are knocking it out at £-99 a bottle.

Hi Steve,

It was interesting to read your posts and I'll try and track some of these wines down.

Your mention of Victoria Moore made me laugh out loud. I occasionally have a look at a wine website and on their forum she came in for a load of abuse for her way-out descriptions!Apparently the best was a wine that reminded her of hot paving slabs! :eek

If you haven't anything better to do look at this!

Also Somontano must be the word of the week - you're the third person to have mentioned the area so something must be going on there!

That's some throat if she can swallow a paving slab!!
