Default Traquair Ale

Ok folks as far as I know there isn't a place in Puerto Pollensa sells Traquair Ales..............YET!!!!. And if a certain friend of mine needs a sales office in Mallorca, I'm her man:lol .

Ok let me tell you a little about where the Ales come from. They are brewed in The Scottish Borders at a place called Traquair House (it's really a castle ) near Innerleithen, the present Lady Maxwell stuart's father re-started the brewery in the mid 60"s and it has since then it has grown in reputation. With sales worldwide, 2 of it's ales have ranked no 1 & 2 in the world.
They brew a few different ales and on special occasions brew an ale for that occasion. They ferment their total production in the original wooden Uncoated oak fermenters (18th century)
Their 3 main ales avaliable in bottles are Traquair House Ale, Traquair Jacobite Ale & Bear Ale. This year they have brewed a really nice special ale, Lairds Ale. I do hope it remains in production.

Here is a short description of each:

TRAQUAIR House Ale ABV 7.2% (Bottled)
The original rich dark ale recognised as a world classic.
"Serious alcohol and fruity malt on the nose... with a little oak and amontillado sherry character" (World Beer Guide).A dark, strong Scots classic which, despite coming from a tiny 18th-century brewhouse, has been hugely influential in export markets, particularly in the USA, where all beer buffs seem to know it. Serious alcohol and fruity malt on the nose, and delicious plum pie and vanilla flavours, with a little oak and amontillado sherry character. Soft and drinkable with a sherry-ish dryness that stops it cloying, and a sweet note reminiscent of the sticky skins of supermarket dates in a box. Excellent with hard farm cheeses, particularly those with an acidic or goaty accent. also unrivalled as a Christmas Eve sipping beer, with candles and log fires and a glittery tree. Serve: room temp. Avail. specialists.

TRAQUAIR Jacobite Ale ABV 8% (Bottled)
Brewed to celebrate the anniversary of the 1745 Jacobite rebellion and now a permanent addition to the range.
"a rich warm biscuity aroma balanced by hops and a herbal note from the coriander ... a bitter sweet finish with hints of chocolate, winey fruit and coriander" (Roger Protz)

BEAR ALE ABV 5% (bottled)
A rich amber coloured ale with hints of oakiness and strong malty flavours.

Other Ales:Other draught ales include Festival Ale, Fair Ale and Wedding Ale brewed for special occasions. Most recently, Blair Ale has been brewed in support of the Labour Party election campaign. Limited edition bottled ales for collectors have included, 100th Brew, 250th Brew, Silver Wedding, Catherine's 21st, Stuart Anniversary Brew.

Serving Suggestions:Ales should ideally be served at room temperature or cellar temperature depending on taste. They are an excellent accompaniment to all kinds of meat dishes, cheese and can be added to fruit cakes and Christmas pudding for an extra kick.

Have I whetted your taste buds for what I rate as the best Ales I've ever tasted? Now your wondering where you can buy these wonderful Ales? ok here's a list for you Traquair House Ale/ Jacobite Ale (bottled); Approximately 100 independent retailers in Scotland and England. Main wholesalers; Wessex Craft Brewers, Peckhams, Beer Direct, and Bear Ale available in Scotland through Sainsburys. Bear Ale; Traquair Arms Hotel, Innerleithen. Robbies Bar, Leith Walk, Edinburgh. The Guildford Arms, West Register Street, Edinburgh and occasional beer festivals. or try www.traquair.co.uk/brewery.

Now for some reason I know that I'm not the only Traquair brewery fan on the forum. So come out the closet folks and rant to the nice people about your favorite. Mines at the moment I must admit is their Lairds Ale.

See Pops your not the only person who writes for free drink!. Traquair House Brewery's owner please note all my sales commision should be transfered into my Spanish bank Account

Hi Rob!

Talk about taking the words right out of my mouth!

Ok, I'm one of the closet fans mentioned by Rob, but have taken my liking for the beer a step further by buying a bottle each (well, OK two then) of the House and the Jacobite Ales to let my boss at the wine shop have a tasting. I managed to get them at the Lindisfarne Mead shop which was a bit like being in heaven for me! (Stuffed full of whiskies, beers and mead - mmmmmmmmm!)

Anyway, my boss loved them both (raved about them, in fact)and so has decided to stock them in the shop much to my delight.

They are perfect Autumn/Winter beers and should ideally be drunk at room temperature to let all those delicious aromas be appreciated.

The House Ale reminded me of slightly burnt fruit cake and was deceptively strong whereas the Jacobite (my favourite) was fruity, spicy and deliciously warming. Conjured up images of log fires and frosty nights!

Both of them rightly deserve their worldwide acclaim and I for one will be taking lots home with me from the shop.

Cheers!

Jane, frosty nights log fires that's our summers up here!!!:lol . I know you think of these ales as perfect for a Autumn/ Winters night. but I have drank them on a balmy summers night round a BBQ pretty closeand boy do they taste so nice and quench a parched throat.
Drag Keith :lol up this way some time, I know he's fond of us scots and our Ales, and visit Traquair House. who knows you may be lucky enough to bump into the lady brewer herself, I'm told she's quiet a friendly person (If Pops can do it and get a free drink, hell i'll give it a try too:lol ).
Do you think any other members will "come out" about their passion for Traquair Ales, or will he wait until he's safely through customs before admitting to shipping suitcases full of the stuff back home:rollin :rollin :rollin . Hope he knows a good lawyer should he get caught:lol

If you haven't heard or tried these Ales keep your eyes open for them. In fact can I say this even if you've never tasted or don't like the "normal" beers served in pubs, give this a try, I just know you'll love the flavours. As ali once said abot Traquair house Ales "floats like a butterfly, kicks like a mule" or something like that:lol

Hey Rob!

Do you honestly think our friend will be able to last without drinking the ales before he gets home? Not sure what the weather was like in PP but would have been perfect for downing a bottle or 6!

I know I couldn't wait to crack them open and I wasn't disappointed.

Happy drinking!

I'm not 100% sure but I think I heard the sound of a crown cap being opened with bare teeth on the journey back to Edinburgh :rollin :rollin :rollin

Robjay, you have taken me right back: just over 20 years ago we lived in Edinburgh and quite by chance found ourselves at Traquair House when they had one of the summer festival thingys, some mad acts from the Fringe were there, the sun blazed down (amazing!) the beer flowed, it was a very happy time I had just about completely forgotten! Do they still have their summer festivities?
We became tasters of all kinds of wierd beers in those days, now pretty well exclusively winos.
Cheers!

Hi Rob,

Well the Traquair Ales arrived in the shop this week and almost the entire stock was bought by me today!

We have the Jacobite Ale and the Laird's Liquor so I bought one of each and sampled them today.

The Laird's Liquor was delicious and yes, tasted of liquorice.

But my favourite is still the Jacobite and we agreed the first smell was Earl Grey tea. Mmmmmm! It is a delicious ale
(not beer) and I will be pushing them both in the following weeks, plus buying lots for my own consumption!

Happy drinking!

Last night I was tidying up the cupboard in the kitchen where I keep all my cooking ingredients, you know herbs, spices, flour etc etc etc, when I spotted two brown bottles:eek , now not being a person who uses bottled or tinned sauces, I prefer to make my own, so I had to investigate, I pulled these bottles out from the back of the cupboard and almost fainted at what they were :eek :eek :eek :eek :eek :eek :eek :eek :eek .
In my hands was two brown bottles on the label of one it said "The Lairds liquor" and the other "Traquair House Ale" My Daughters had made me up a hamper of some luxury foods and drinks that I enjoy as a present for Christmas last year and I'd put these bottles somewhere safe, so safe I'd forgotten about them :rollin :rollin :rollin . I doubt they will last past this weekend:lol .

I will think of that wonderful day with hikerbiker and Wendy as I sip on my hidden treasures.

Cheers Hiker & Wendy and thank you to my ever thoughtful daughters.

Hi Rob!

You've posted some drivel in your time but I refuse to believe this one! You're pulling our legs!!

How on earth can two bottles of absolutely delicious beer remain at the back of your cupboard for so long???:eek

Anyway, if what you are saying is true I hope you enjoy them!

I am working in the wine shop on Saturday and there will be a couple (or more) of those brown bottles finding themselves accompanying me home.:b

Enjoy!

I still can't believe it either, I keep pecking in to make sure it wasn't all just a nice dream. Yupp there they are right at the back out of harms way. It's a good job my daughters don't like Ale as much as they like my cheap plonk:lol
