It's a Bargain!!!

Tesco's Wine Festival ends this week so hurry on down and get some bargains while they last!

Here's two that caught my eye:

Calloway Crossing Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz
This is a modern style Shiraz Cabernet with rich ripe fruit flavours and a smooth, medium-bodied palate.

This is an absolute bargain at £2.99 (half-price) and I loved it's soft fruity style.

Tesco Finest Howcroft Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot
A full bodied, rich red wine with warm, ripe luscious fruit with a nose of plum, cherry and spice aromas.

My dad was raving about this when I saw him today and said he and my mum finished the bottle and were left wanting more! High praise from him so I'm off tomorrow to get some before they sell out!

Another bargain at £3.99

It's a great time to stock up for Christmas if you can be disciplined enough not to drink them! Would never work in my house!

Right that's it I'll never trust the cheap plonk section @ Tesco's ever again!

So they've tricked me!

And here was me thinking Calloway Crossing Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz was just an ordinary cheapo plonko, granted in my upper price bracket, and then Jane tells us it's 1/2 price!

I'm going write to Tesco's and make a complaint, how am I expected to maintain this balance between wino and vino if they play tricks like this.

No Calloway Crossing was available but I got a Howcroft Vineyard Estate Reserve Shiraz in Tesco. 14.5% and at £3.99 it was ticketed as half price but the ticket stated offer ends 4.10.05. Of course it scanned as £3.99!
Usual supermarket nonsense!:lol

Porto m8 here's a wee tip for you. The wine aisles in Tesco's is set out in a certain way which suits the customer. Here is their secret...............

The "Jane" customer: These customers tend to walk around with their noses in the air and so only ever see items on the top shelves in the store. So Tesco's put all the expensive wines up there. After all "One" would never be caught looking at the label from a lesser vineyard.

The "Rob" customer: these customers tend to be down trodden and walk with shoulders slouched scanning the ground for any dropped coins and cigarette butts. They would never see the expensive bottles way up on the top shelves. What these customers see is the bottom shelves only, so Tesco's put all their Vino de l'cheapo bottles on these shelves with the % in full veiw. After all what really matters is the price and the %, the higher the % and lower the price the quicker the bottles fly off the shelves.

The "Pops" customer: These customers tend to be in a hurry often dragging screeming "MiniMe's" behind them. Now they are never going to look below trolley level because they might just make eye contact with a "MiniMe" and they just don't want that,and they just know that they are daren't get caught looking at anything on the top shelf of any shop. These customers only ever get to see the middle shelves, So Tesco's filled these shelves with wines that appear to be down from the top shelf for a limited time, wines that are just hovering there until there is a space on the bottom shelf for them and lets not forget all those bottles that their last wine buyer bought by the container load (just before he "left", he now works for Aldi collecting trolleys from the carpark.) so they print bright yellow labels telling you what a bargin 3p off and if it's a bargin it must be good.

Now for the tough question which shelf do you buy your wine from?

I'll be watching, if i can manage to get my gaze off the floor.

You told me that you bought all your wines in the DIY section of Tesco's under "drain cleaners" and "paint strippers".:eek

Have you gone a bit up-market then??

And as for "one", "one" works in an independent wine and spirits retailer so "one" rarely ventures into Tesco's, preferring to do "one's" wine buying at a more superior establishment.

Is that why I heading off to France again this Saturday to buy some more cheap plonk???:rollin

How many plastic litre bottles of wine can you get in the back of a Passat?

Well Rob, I have to confess to being a yellow label girl, that and the BOGOF's ... they get me every time !!!!!!!!!!!

Come on Jane , do tell, what did "one" purchase on "one's" sojourn across to France ?

Hi cd!

We go this Saturday coming (15th - is that an important date for someone??) but will be on the look-out for some New World wines, a fair amount of cheap gin (I wonder why?) and chocolate.

I will also be coming home laden down with baguettes as everybody else does....:lol

No doubt I will reveal all in the "Room" next week and any good offers I see in Tesco's (ooops! Sorry! I mean "Le Chais", that cute little bijou wine shop next to the posh chocolate place where "one" will be going to fill "one's" wicker basket full of top class Burgundy)

i'll tell Toni to give you his cheapest plonk next thursday, and you can drink it while entertaining my 'screaming minime'. However sorry she's not like that-she knows how to behave herself.Obviously going to be a top shelf drinker!

I on the other hand will sit up the other end of the table drinking the yellow labled bottles.

Rob get a life!!!(lol) surely you've got better things to do than watch people shopping in tescos.

Whoops, did I upset you?

I've met your "Minime" and I'll be over the moon spending the night entertaining her. I'll maybe pick up some tips on how I should behave in public:lol .

Hiro already knows to ensure my Sangria (" they make Sangria just for the tourist you know" 1 ex-pat tells her ex-pat friend :eek ) is up to it's usual very high standard.

I really don't mind you sitting at the top of the table just as long as I'm out of range of you and your tin tray

:lol .

Right I'm off, I've got to chair a meeting of my local Shopperspotting club, It's held every second Wednesday in my local Tesco's coffee shop, where we can also watch the shoppers in comfort whilst we sip our cocoa.:rollin

Have you tried the Howcroft Shiraz yet?

I have a sneaking feeling it may have been the Shiraz my dad was raving about!

On a visit to a different Tesco last Friday the Calloway Crossing was not on offer and was £5.99.

However the Howcroft Vineyard Cabernet Merlot was available but not the Shiraz as elsewhere acquired and at £3.99. This must be a good price as Jane saw it in France at about £5.50 on Saturday.

But the offer may end as soon as today or tomorrow.

Australia is supposed to be awash with wine this year so possibly more deals to come in the next few months?

A half price for you CD in Tesco too!

Evolution S African Merlot Western Cape 2004 14% for £3.64 labelled as a smooth rich red bursting with soft berry flavours and a hint of oak.

Again watch the offer date!:eek

Hi everyone!

We made the trek to Calais on Saturday and despite having a 90 minute delay, we had quite a good day.

However, I think at the moment there are better deals available in your local Tesco and on the web.

The Howcroft, as Porto said quite rightly, was £5.50 in France yet just £3.99 here in the UK. And if you order online it goes down to £3.59 a bottle.

I also saw today the Fetzer Barrel Select Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon for £3.99 (half-price) and £3.59 on the web. 6 bottles of either works out at £21.55 which I think is a bargain.

We made some savings on beer and I bought a litre bottle of Gin for £7.40 but I think you really have to buy in bulk to make any savings, after taking into account ferry/train fares and fuel (diesel was cheap at Cite Europe).

Both Tesco and Carrefour were really pushing the JP Chenet range which is OK and ideal for everyday drinking.

It's been a month now since any new posts appeared on the wine section and I cannot believe that you lot haven't been drinking wine in that time!

I sent hubby off to Tesco's yesterday with strict instructions to get some wine on special offer and he came back with some wine that I mentioned way back in the Autumn (I think).

Tonight I opened a bottle of the Calloway Crossing Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz and managed to polish off the bottle without any help from hubby.

Oops! Should I be admitting to that??

Anyway, it was delicious and hubby said he thought it was about £2.99.

Definitely worth a look!

Anybody else know of any bargains to be had at the moment? Rob??? You know you want to tell us!!:rollin

We are still polishing off the wine from Christmas, I did bulk purchase from Tesco on line which was delivered (as were my groceries, so less stressful than pushing through the crowds with an overloaded trolly), all worked very welland some very good deals on champagne (that has all gone - hic):lol
Lots of odd bottles brought to our party which I'll take a closer look at, trying to er cut down a bit for the next little while (though have a girls dinner tomorrow night, why???

)
