Default Lovely Tinto at €1.89

Having experienced lots of lovely red wines, we have made it our challenge to find good wines at cheap prices.

Caprabo sell "Navarra Vino Tinto" at €1.89 a bottle which is lovely. It is bottled specially for them, so I am not sure if it can be bought in other places. I don't know much about Navarra wines, but this one tastes like a Merlot. We have had far too many bottles and haven't had a bad one yet.

On one occasion we also had a Navarra Chardonnay which was probably the best white white we have had in Mallorca. Sadly it doesn't seem to be regularly available.

Question for Jane - where or what is Navarra? It doesn't feature in my wine books.

Hi Roy!

It's great to hear from you again and I hope you are enjoying your quest to find reasonably priced wines in Mallorca.

OK - Navarra...

Navarra is a region in the north of Spain, right next to Rioja and close to the French border, the main town of which is Pamplona.

When the phylloxera (or vine-louse) epidemic hit the French vineyards between 1860 and 1890, the French turned to nearby Navarra to buy their wine.

The main grapes planted are Garnacha and Tempranillo, for reds, and Viura for white wines.

Notable producers are Julian Chivite which produces the Gran Feudo which I am sure is available in Waitrose and Castillo de Monjardin.

Hope this helps!

Jane,

Thanks for the information. i knew I could rely on you!

Robjay,

Our personal challenge is never to pay more than €3 for a red. It is so easy to buy good reds at €6-10, that a challenge is needed.

We are still looking for good whites - at any price! We are still struggling to find whites that we enjoy. Maybe we are too fussy, but we enjoy the NZ/Chilean/Australian/SA African whites very much and we have found no comparison with the Spanish whites.
