Default Rose Wine

One of my favourite things to do in the summer is to sit in the garden and drink a glass or two of Rose wine (with or without hubby on the barbecue ).

I was really pleased yesterday when I read Matthew Jukes' column in the Mail which was all about Rose!

I think Rose has managed to shake off its non-serious label and there are some great wines from France.

Here's what Matthew Jukes recommended:

Domaine Begude Pinot Noir Rose - Vin de Pays d'Oc 2005

£6.24 or £4.99 if you buy any two roses - Majestic.

"...a delightful wine, with a whisper of raspberry and cranberry fruit on the nose and a long, cool finish."

Louis Jadot Beaujolais Rose - Burgundy 2005

£6.99 Waitrose

"...a lovely light red cherry-scented wine..."

Marks & Spencer Bourgogne Rose - Epineuil 2005

£8.99

"...a fleshier wine than the above two, but it still retains a superb, tight, mineral line on the finish which shows off the red fruit with style." :eek

La Vieille Ferme Rose - Cotes du Ventoux 2005

£5.99 Waitrose

"...it has more oomph than the Burgundian-influenced wines above, which makes it more useful for fish and white-meat main-course dishes." He also says it's good with cheese.

Domaine Saint-Antoine Rose - Costieres de Nimes 2005

£5.49 Oddbins

"Saint-Antoine is a chunky rose with a spine of blackberry juice and licquorice." Recommended for barbecues.

Cheers and happy drinking!
Jane

Hi Jane,

I posted abou this originally under the supermarket offers but one of the finest rose wines (in my opinion!) is now available in Sainsburys. Torres De Casta - £5.49 a bottle. Gorgeous dry wine! Just hope they will stock it all year round and not just in the Summer!

I can drink Rose any time of the year...

can I add a couple of my favourites?

Rose d@Anjou from waitrose

on offer @ £3.19

Ernest & Julio Gallo White zinfandel

can't remember the price.

We also keep a couple of bottles of ame in the fridge for drivers, makes them feel part of the party without drinking alcohol comes in white, rose and red. Also nice for teenagers who want to feel grownup!

My favourite Rose which we buy direct from a supplier in Northampton but have never seen in any UK supermarket is Casal Mendes. Really dry and delicious

You can however get it in Caprabo and I plan to stock up next week when I'm out with a girlfriend who glugs it back..unlike me of course who can make a glass last all evening It also comes in a white but haven't tried that yet.

Casal Mendes rose and white brings back memories of past holidays in Portugal - i remember both tasting very nice indeed all those years ago - or am i looking through rose tinted glasses.

Haven't had time to post for a couple of days as I've had my friend over from Dubai. we went to Tesco's and bought half a dozen bottles of Rose (and drunk four so far :eek ) I'll review when she's gone tomorrow..tired now going to bed ...hic :\

Jane I'll also look up the name of the 'Rose' guy and let you know.

Debs...zzzzzzz

PS Have chipped a bone in my foot (another story!) so the
wine has been purely medicinal!!!

Debz I know you did it playing for England, who said they played like a load of *** Women, however I am sure the wine will help you make a speedy recovery. I also like Rose wine well chilled but not an expert like you and Jane, I am only a expert at drinking it.

Enjoy :eek

Snowy

It's my 4th metatarsal so I'm well and truly Rooney'ed :\ and I'm no expert on wine either I just know what I like and it's easing the pain !!!

Jane of the 4 rose's my friend and I have tried so far I've listed in order of preference ,although by the end of both nights we were beyond caring!! All from Tesco's with 20% off if you buy 6 or more bottles

1) Arniston Bay Pinotage
Says on bottle lively strawbwerry and violet aromas. It
was very fruity but a little too dry even for me, as I
like rose to have a little sweetness to it.

2) J.P Chenet Grenache
This is the wine with the wonky topped bottle. I've always
thought this wine a bit naff and gimmicky but it was
actually very drinkable.

3)Veneto Pinot Grigio Blush

This was lovely very delicate and a crisp taste but not
overly dry

4) Tesco Chilean Cab Sauvignon

This was our favourite really fruity dry and scrummy !
Sorry my descriptions are rubbish but it was very
delicious

My wine man was called Neil from a company called Vivo Vino
I've got his number if you would like it. I thought he lived in
Northampton but on checking his number starts 01536 so
not sure where that is, but he has delivered to me so he
can't live far away.

Jimbo,

Hmmmmm - maybe you should take more water with it?? Or make a point of always wearing that hat when you go out into the sun...

Debs,

Thanks for the tasting notes - they were great! I wish more people would tell us what they like or don't like about the wines they drink.

As for 01536 - that's a Kettering number. But it's not far from Northampton. And I'm sure you can buy that Rose in Majestic. I googled it and it was advertised by them. We have a Majestic in Northampton.

Hope that foot is better...

Jane

PS - Booths stock it as well :

Jiggy - you need to go for one of the dry rose wines. There are a lot that are quite sweet and I don't like these at all.

I only tend to buy Rose wine that is a 1 or 2 on the dry to sweet scale.

Most of the Supermarkets have got a good selection in at the moment.

Jiggy try the Arniston Bay Pinotage it is very dry ... I don't 'do' sweet and this was a bit too dry even for me . It was crisp and lively with a delicate tartness and fresh fruity bouquet...my description not the bottles!!!!
