Default Rip off?

Just lately whenever I've been out to a pub or restaurant, I've noticed the wine measures are getting larger and larger.

Last week, I went out with my mum and the kids for a meal at a trendy new restaurant in MK (Giraffe) - Debs...you might know it.

Anyway, I had a look at the drinks menu and chose an American Zinfandel. It was only when the waitress asked what measure I wanted - small or large - that I noticed the price- £5.50 for a 250ml glass!!:eek

It worked out cheaper to buy a bottle of the house red which was a delicious South African Shiraz.

Anyone got any views on this? I know that 250ml is equivalent to a third of a bottle, but whatever happened to the 125ml measure?

175ml seems to be the norm these days and it can be worrying for people who have a couple of glasses and think they're OK to drive.

Plus, can anyone beat this price for a glass of wine??

Jane

Extract from the wine list at our local Italian

This is not a city centre restaurant, it is a nice place to eat, great atmosphere and great food ...... but it is just a place in what we love to still call a village but is probably more accurately described as suburbia

Chardonnay, Mandrarossa
Italy, Sicily, 2005
175ml 4.25 250ml 5.95 btl 17.25

Sauvignon Blanc Reserva Montgras
Chile, Casablanca Valley, 2005
175ml 4.50 250ml 6.50 btl 18.95

Merlot, Mandrarossa
Italy, Sicily, 2005 175ml 4.25 250ml 5.95 btl 17.25

Shiraz Reserve, Ashbury Grove
Australia, 2005 175ml 4.50 250ml 6.50 btl

WOW!

cd - thanks for that! Those prices are steep!

I can remember (back in the good old days...:lol ) when a glass of wine cost about £2.00.

A round for hubby and me was about £4.00 (he would drink a pint of beer).

Now, the same round could cost about £8.00:eek depending on the measure of wine and where you're drinking it.

Scary!

Hubby and I have just returned from PP. As flights from Bournemouth don't start til end of March, we had to fly from Heathrow. We decided to stay overnight at the Sheraton which included an 8 day car park. We had a glass of Shiraz and a pint of lager. The Shiraz definitely wasn't 175 ml, probably only 125 mls. The price ? Just over £11.00 for the two drinks. Eek! :eek

I don't know how these places can charge so much...it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth when I'm charged that amount.

Jane,

Back in the good old days in my home town, a pint cost 1/3d !
(Thats one shilling and threepennies).

If you asked for a glass of wine.......you would waken up in casuality a few days later.

Cheers,
Jimbo.
