Jose Ferrer Reserva 1999 - Binissalem

As a special treat, I decided to open my last remaining bottle of the Jose Ferrer Reserva tonight.

As I uncorked the wine I noticed some sediment clinging to the neck so I carefully decanted it about an hour ago.

Reading the back of the bottle, and taking into consideration my poor Spanish I managed to understand that the wine is made up of 70% Mantonegro, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Tempranillo and 4% Callet.

It has undergone "malolactic fermentation" :eek (harsh acids allowed to change into softer "lactic" acids") and has spent 21 months in new American oak, followed by a further 15 months in bottle in underground caves.

My first taste took me straight back to Mallorca - oaky, lots of vanilla, smooth with a warming aftertaste because of the high alcohol content of 13.5%. It was slightly dry but would be great with lamb.

The Jose Ferrer Reserva 1999 is available in PP - I think we bought our bottles in SYP but I'm sure the large supermarkets will stock a range of Jose Ferrer (or Franja Roja) wines. I think the Reservas are better than the Crianzas.

Happy drinking!!
