Default Holiday Wine - Does it Travel??

Apparently not!!

We opened a bottle of the Ses Ferritges 2003 tonight to go with the roast beef and I have to admit I was disappointed.

We enjoyed Miquel Oliver's Mont Ferrutx at La Fortalesa and I really wanted to try his Ses Ferritges and the Aia which were both given a great review by Spanish wine expert John Radford.

We bought the wines at the bodega paying about 8 euros for the SF and 12 euros for the Aia.

The SF was very tannic and left an odd metallic taste in my mouth. So, not to be defeated, I emptied the entire bottle into a jug, swirled it around a bit, put it back into the bottle and then repeated the exercise.

I then left it alone for a while and it did improve slightly with the beef.

Now, 2 hours after opening it's improved a bit again, but as we bought six bottles of various Mallorcan wines home with us, I am wondering whether tastebuds alter radically on holiday, or whether the whole wonderful business of being able to relax (plus eating local foods) fools people into enjoying the local wine?

Hubby's grumbling again and said he would rather have opened a bottle of Chateauneuf de Pape, but there you are. There's no pleasing some people...
