Default Wines of Mallorca

Just a quick note on the wines of Mallorca - I will post more information in the coming months.

For those of you who do not know, the wines of Mallorca have greatly improved in recent years - gone are the heady, cheap house wines of old and sunburnt reds and dodgy whites.

The serious wine producers in Mallorca are now knocking at the the doors of the more well know producers from the mainland and need to be taken note of.

Please do not think that you bag a bargain at 2 euros a bottle. If you spend a little more - up to 6 euros or more, just over 4 a bottle you will be amazed at the difference (I hope!) Please always look for Mallorcan wines on the retsaurant wine lists to both help the local wine producers and also to enjoy the fruits of a beautiful island

The wines of the following producers are our favourites:-
Marcia Batle
Mont Ferrux - named after a mountain near Alcudia
Jose Ferrer in Binissalem
Juame Mesquida

Thanks for your interest - Paul Rollings - Rollings Wine Company of Harpenden

Hi Paul

It's a shame you're so new to the forum - I've posted extensively on Mallorcan and Spanish wines over the last six months but they have all disappeared. Hopefully they will return.

I know some kind forum members have printed off my posts on Mallorcan wines but below are the websites of some of them in case you would like another look (and in case the posts aren't restored again):

Jose Ferrer, Binissalem

I'm a fan of the Reserva made from Manto Negro, Tempranillo, Cabernet and Callet grapes.

Macia Batle

The wines are rated as good to very good by John Radford (Spanish wine expert). Look out for the reserva private collection.

Pere Seda, Manacor

We brought home a bottle of the crianza and will report back on it soon.

Miquel Oliver, Petra

Wine shop is down a dusty quiet street but we enjoyed the Mont Ferrutx and the Ses Ferritges. The Aia we have yet to drink. The Ses Ferritges went down a storm with my boss. Needs a bit of breathing to fully enjoy the aromas.

Miquel Gelabert, Manacor

Never got around to drinking any wine from this bodega but if anyone has, please let me know!! Look out for Torrent Negre and Gran Vinya Son Caules.

Happy drinking!!
