Default Shopping for Food and Toiletries.

To give you a rough idea of what you can expect to pay for some basic items i will post average prices and some supermarket offers. It will only show prices in PP shops and i cannot give prices for every item that is stocked. I will update this thread as and when i see new offers and i will add or remove some things according to availability.

The British food shop is great for branded goods that you can't buy anywhere else here but of course it will be more expensive (import duties to be paid), however they do offer a lot of BOGOF deals new lines each week.

Eroski offers are a bit complicated, they offer a discount if you buy 2 of the same on some lines, at the moment these are:-
2x barra (bagette) = 90cents less 35cents so you pay 65cents.
2x large eggs doz = 2.30€ less 1.05€ you pay 1.15€.
2x Don Simon fruit juice = 1.98 less 71c you pay 1.27.

Tomatoes = 1.29 per kilo.
Cucumbers = 1.15 per kilo

Entrecote steak = 8.95 per kilo.
Chicken breasts =1.99 per kilo.
Serrano ham = 1.89 per kilo.
Ham = 80c for 100g
Pizzas = 1.59 each.

Hiper-Centrooffers at the moment are:-
Large eggs doz = 95c
Barra = 49c
Rice 1kg bag = 69c
4x Burger buns = 59c

Melon = 95c
Mushrooms = 1.98 per kilo

Pork chops = 2.68 per kilo
Shell on prawns = 5.90 per kilo.

Default Market prices.

Can i just say, a lot of people believe things will be cheaper in the market, don't be fooled they are not always.
I can't give you the prices for individual stalls but here are the averages :-

Tomatoes depending on varieties = 1.17 - 2.26 per kg.
Potatoes = 1.13 per kg.
Cabbage = 75c each.
Large lettuce = 75c each.
Peppers = 4€ per kg (Supermarket 2.40)
Carrots = 1.40 per kg.
Onions = 1€ per kg.
Cucumber = 1.50 per kg (Supermarket 1.29)
Strawberries = 3.50 per kg (supermarket 1.39)

Toiletries

With so many limits on what you can carry in hand luggage and of course the need to keep suitcase weights below 15kg-20kg, some of you may be thinking of buying your toiletries here. Supermarket prices can be very high and of course you can't get a lot of the brands that are freely available in the UK but i find the different brands they sell here are every bit as good. Schlecker are very good for toiletries and cleaning products.

Eroski are selling :-
Licor Polo Toothpaste 75ml = 1.45
Timotei shampoo 400ml = 2.55
Fa shower gel 650ml = 1.90
Fa deodorant spray 200ml = 2.55

Schlecker are selling :-
Colgate toothpaste 2x75ml = 2.98
Own brand toothpaste 75ml = 89c
Own brand roll-on deodorant 50ml = 99c
Shower gel many brands 650ml prices starting from = 1.29
Shampoo many brands 650ml prices starting from 99c

Thanks Sparky for your continuing hard work to enable us all to have great holidays. Is the quality of the fruit and veg any better from the market compared to the supermarket? though looking at the price it would have to be highly better.

Hi Pips, to be honest with you we find the quality of meat/ fruit/ veg in Hiper Centro is the best in the port, we buy very little from the market.
Thank you for your appreciation .

Eroski is currently promoting certain British products, and has HP sauce at 3.41 euros, and it is only 2.20 euros in the The British food shop Puerto Pollensa, Mallorca Majorca - Shops, Markets

So you do need to keep a look out on the prices.
PM.

Yes Eroski must be having a conversion rate problem with their british goods.The prices we saw when they started this promotion a month ago certainly raised my eyebrows to a higher level.Bisto I recall was apx £4,and as for the price of a curry sauce!!!We shall take a few supplies along from Sainsburys.

Couldn't agree more but we have found a lot of "local" brands are every bit as good as "British" brands and at a fraction of the price.

lollipop, i know about Mercadona but as i said i am restricting my research on this thread to PP to keep it simple, not every tourist has transport and only want to know about prices in PP.

Sparky,yes I realised that but was trying to emphasise your point about supermarkets being better than market. Sorry for confusion.

We shopped at Eroski and enjoyed trying out the local brands which were a fraction of the price of british food. In particular the big bag of value ready salted crisps were good and my children love the processed cheese squares with fresh tomatoes - (strange I know!) which were good value too. The baguettes were usually warm and tasted lovely -I was surprised that I couldnt find any fresh olives in the supermarket but got some from the market on wednesday. Also worth a mention was the multi pack of chocolate sandwich biscuits always a favourite when on holiday!

There are no import duties to be paid.Had hoped the prices may go down with the pound but apparently not so
