New LIDL?

We are coming over in September and staying in a villa which is located between Pollensa Town and Alcudia. I would be interested if anyone knows if the new LIDL is open yet which was on the old Eroski site near the roundabout in Pollensa Town.

In previous years we have always shopped at the other two Eroski's and occasionally at Carrefour in Palma.

Could anyone enlighten me please? Thanks.

meg1973 18-08-2011 14:56

it is not finished by a long way , no roof on ,looks as if it could be a couple of months before it is ready to be honest, sorry to say

Paules 18-08-2011 15:07

Thanks Meg1973. It looks as though we will have to stick with the tried and tested Eroski supermarkets again.

majprop 18-08-2011 16:05

I go past the new building quite a lot and I can say that the roof is now on and the interior flooring finished they are now working on the parking area. When you bear in mind that the Alcudia Lidl was finished within eight weeks I think there is a chance it will be ready depending on when you are over. I was quite fascinated in the way it is constructed, rather like a lego, the lorries turned up off the morning ferry and the pieces were craned straight into place and sealed.

lollipop 18-08-2011 16:46

They are built a bit like the McDonalds are in the UK,all the same design. I agree that I think it will open soon.

Paules 20-08-2011 15:36

We are coming over from 10th to 24th September so we may be lucky and the supermarket is open.

marilyn 23-09-2011 12:38

Does anyone know how the building works are coming along? I am out in 2 weeks and was hoping it might be open by then

sws97sdg 23-09-2011 12:45

When I was out two weeks ago it was far from finished, opinions differ but I think it will be at last a month - six weeks until opening.

Sparky 23-09-2011 12:55

Hubby drove past the site this morning and says there are lights on inside and the signs are going up. ;)

lollipop 23-09-2011 13:14

SWS they have worked very hard including Sundays and I think it will open by the end of this month. The tarmac carpark is laid and as Sparky said, lights on inside and the outer facias nearly complete. It doesn't take them long to stock as they don't have complicated shelving.

sws97sdg 23-09-2011 13:18

That is one thing I thought, I have never been in one but heard the inside is plain and wont take long to finish, sounds just as well I didnt have a bet with Sparky over the completion date ;)

fil6699 23-09-2011 15:38

LOL I told all it would be open by October and looks like I am going to be right again lol
this is great news for the Port Eroski you best get your act together . SWS you should get in one (never thought I would be saying that about Lidl) BUT They have great products and very good prices. Huge savings on Eroski on most items.

eleanor 23-09-2011 17:09

Got to agree fil. Excellent products and prices and often the shops are set out as they are in the UK so easy to find items.

We used to drive to Inca to shop in Lidl years ago as there was much larger choice for non eat meaters at that time. I found that the Mallorcan and Spanish had a habit of putting pieces of chicken or other meats in places not expected in some of their ready made foods i.e. cooked rice or pasta dishes. This didn't happen with Lidl.
Anyway this sounds somewhat silly now but years ago it happened and for a veggie was a great sin. The drive was therefore worthwhile.

I think it is great news that Lidl will be in Pollensa and I look forward to shopping there.

sws97sdg 23-09-2011 18:03

Lol, yes fil looks like you are going to be right, why did we doubt you, will try it next time over in January

Nick 23-09-2011 18:30

Is anyone bothered ???!!!!

It's a Lidl's for goodness sake..........

eleanor 23-09-2011 18:37

Yes I think they probably are! There are so many posts dotted around from people asking for advice regarding supermarkets and shopping generally. Those who self cater or rent a property still have a shop to do even when on holiday so I think there are a number of people who are bothered. If they receive the help they require by us answering a question and making their life on holiday a little easier then that is just fine.

Yes, many folk I would imagine.....locals should benifit with lower prices and good for self-catering tourists also.

We don't have one over here but my sister rates them highly for groceries!
Their wine is very reasonable too I believe.:)

cumberland8 23-09-2011 19:47

It's more a question of bringing our shopping experience into a fair price bracket,I am sure most of you experienced the extortinate prices we had to pay at the likes of Euroski, this year.
In most cases they were at least 30per cent more than the UK.
People are fed up to the back teeth to being ripped off because of their monopoly .
This does not do the Port any favours.

Deanscroft 23-09-2011 20:51

Let us not make the mistake of thinking that a Lidl here will have prices like a Lidl in the UK. All they have to do to attract business is to be slightly cheaper than the Eroski next door. This is certainly the case with the one in Alcudia where things are generally just slightly lower than the nearby competition but some products are still cheaper in the Mercadonna.

whaleywanderer 24-09-2011 09:56

Really looking forward to shopping in Lldl, it will be good to have options. Imo competition is always a good thing.

Eroski

Hi all

We have stayed in pollensa town the past two years and love it. We usually stay on the outdoors near cellar el moli, but this year we will be staying at can curt which is nearby, We always shop at the eroski on the main road, has this now gone and been replaced by lidl?

We will be having a car this year, so can travel if lidl isn't open yet.

Thanks in advance

Nanette

Sparky 24-09-2011 11:38

Welcome to the forum Nanette. The new Lidl store has been built beside the Eroski store so we will have a bigger choice and hopefully better prices.:D

animagic21 24-09-2011 13:26

Sparky, not sure of location, do you mean on that straight piece of road from what we call the "pots" roundabout down into PP? Where you would turn off to go to CSV & there is/was a supermarket on the right going towards the port? We are over in 12 days & are hoping Lidl will be open! Thanks! PS hope the weather improves again!!!

Belladonna 24-09-2011 15:42

Exactly there animagic. Cannot believe that they have opened right next door to Eroski - hopefully it will bring a great price war to benefit us shoppers!
The building is going up ridiculously fast, but I dont really think it will be up and serving in 12 days. I am sure it will be by November though, and will be testing it out for sure!

eleanor 24-09-2011 16:41

Apparently according to husband they use what many architects are using and known as SIP method of building which means a building is up in no time at all!
Probably much more complicated than my explanation but i'm afraid I turned off! lol Suddenly the rugby seems very interesting!!!

Belladonna 24-09-2011 16:52

Ah, but watching the builders actually working can be just as interesting!;)

animagic21 24-09-2011 16:57

Thanks for info Belladonna. Yes it is weird Lidl has been built next door, will be interesting to see what happens! shame about this year, but hopefully we'll be over in 2012!

eleanor 24-09-2011 16:58

emmm say no more Bella! lol

Great to have you back - pleased you had a good time - lots of posts to follow?? look forward to it!

eleanor 24-09-2011 17:34

Back to Lidl - I'm sure if they have the same impact in Mallorca as they do here then Eroski will find itself with a problem. Personally I don't care about the colour of their shelves - it's their good prices I welcome!

LOL you obviously don't do any shopping in PP for any length of time (lucky you) If you did you would know exactly why this is a great addition to the Port in UK it may be just a Lidl here in PP it means greater choice better value and competition for Eroski who have the monopoly. bet if you call in next time your out you will see why lots of us are bothered.:)

eleanor 26-09-2011 10:45

Well said Fil - totally agree!

joelise80 26-09-2011 16:09

I must say when I was driving out of the Eroski car park last week I noticed the builders working ;) and then realised it was the new Lidl I had heard about on here. I am amazed they have been allowed to open there, but how fantastic that at last Eroski have some competiton in the area other than Mercadona in Alcudia (which I don't like) and the new Carrefour express (lovely shiney new store that reminded me of M&S food) in the port of Alcudia. I still miss Caprabo :(

JMD40 27-09-2011 12:11

I have only been over to the LIDL in Alcudia a couple of times but it does not seem the place to do the full weekly shop - I found I still prefer the choices and prices of Mercadonna. In Lidl I tend to purchase loads of large bottles of water (only 55c for 5l intstead of about 75c in Eroski), wine, lovely rustic bread, biscuits and juices. I was not very impressed with other products but maybe I will give it another try when the store opens here in Pollensa. The important thing will be the competion for Eroski who have a monopoly and lets hope the store is clean as the large Eroski in PP is a disgrace!!

lollipop 27-09-2011 13:21

JMD40, I agree you cannot do a full shop but as you say they do have some good things. My best recent purchase was frozen fruit, mixed berries and raspberry's. Don't find that very often. I also think the english bacon is a really good price.

roig cat 27-09-2011 18:33

Their Greek yoghurt is yummy, comes in 1kg buckets. Cant wait to eat Greek yoghurt in Spain, how continental. X

Sparky 03-10-2011 12:56

Mr Sparky has just driven past the new Lidl store and he says the shelves are being stocked up and the trollies are lined up outside so it looks like opening any day now ;).

Nick 03-10-2011 14:46

Will there be a "VIP" opening night ?!

Sparky 03-10-2011 15:08

Yes Nick apparently the guest list is the same one "Cappuccino Gran Cafe" used for their grand opening .

fil6699 03-10-2011 19:44

hmmmm what month is it aaa yes October and the winner of when will Lidle open is :):):)

fil6699 03-10-2011 19:45
