Mir Grocers

Just back in Scotland tonight after a fantastically relaxing week long break in Pollenca.

I've searched the forum for any mention of this and couldn't find it but one of our favourite shops in the Port was the Mir grocers on Avenue de Joan XXIII - just before the roundabout on the left hand side as you came in. Manys the time we've spent an hour raking through the shelves upstairs looking for a bargain but when we went back this time it's now a Barclays bank!

Anyone know what happened to the shop - did the owner retire or pass on? We've been going to Pollenca for over 20 years and he always seemed to be there, no matter what time you went - sitting at his till at the bottom of the spiral stair case...

Mir

Mr Mir is still around, sitting at home counting his money no doubt. He and his family own half the town! (the Dakota tex-mex's, O'Haras. Cafe Algar, 1919, several shops, apartment blocks etc etc)

Hi Malcolm

There was a thread about this some time ago.

Apparently the shop was sold as the owner said he couldn't compete with supermarket prices. It was a great shame as a lot of people enjoyed shopping in there. Some of the wines on the top floor were very old and probably very vinegary as it was so hot up there!

I'll go and see if I can find the thread for you - there were some photos on there as well.

Jane:)

Thanks for that Jane - I did search the forum for "Mir" before posting but didn't find anything. Interested to read that he owns other businesses throughout PP - I hope he's enjoying his retirement. :)

Also that he did speak some English - we certainly never got a word of English out of him the whole time we shopped there!

We quite often used to stop for a cortado and gateaux at Cafe Algar but didn't manage this time around as it was already shut for the winter (until next March)!

Hi Malcolm,

I don't think the search facility likes words of three letters or less! I can't believe it's been a year since the shop closed.

Jane:)

You see "Mr" Mir around the town most days, looks as cheerful as usual, so hard to see if he's enjoying his retirement or not.
