Default Airport shops VAT rip-off

I'm outraged. Just read in the "I" newspaper the reason why airport shops have that extremely annoying habit of asking you for your boarding pass when making purchases. It's so they can get out of paying VAT! Can you believe it?! Even worse, they don't pass a single penny onto the customer. What a disgrace.

I for one will NEVER again show my boarding pass and urge you all to do likewise and pass this on.

Yet another example of rip-off Britain.

Yes, just been reading about this! They have certainly been pulling the wool over our eyes for years, having us believe it was law to show it! The Independent newspaper have done a good write up and short video if you google it, I doubt we are allowed to put a link on here. It would be interesting to see how many rebels do actually refuse once they are at the till!

DID you ever get a really good deal at the Duty free shop ????????????
I can tell you now the one in Palma is probably next to Singapore the most expensive in the world
Those of you who smoke cigarettes and tobacco have ALWAYS been cheaper in the port as to is alcohol and perfume. They have a captured audience and they literary milk you for every Penny. have you noticed now every airport forces you to walk through the duty free after you clear security
Here is some sound advice buy all your shopping in the port I guarantee you will save money. And then whilst waiting for you flight walk round the duty free shop spraying all the samples of perfume and tasting the alcohol when available and get you own back for years of being ripped of enjoy

Why on earth do Boots insist on my boarding pass when I'm buying a £3.29 Meal Deal!! to eat on the plane!!

In Newcastle, I often forget my pass so they just ask where I'm going. Might lie and say USA or somewhere so they claim the tax back fraudulently!!

Serves them right trying to rip off the poor tourist who has no choice than to pre order or stock up after security.

What peeves me most about this blatant rip-off, apart from the fact that these greedy companies are making on the tourist, is that I'd imagine the vast majority of us were under the incorrect assumption that it was bordering on illegal not to show the boarding pass.

I rarely buy anything in airports but I will definitely be buying even less in future.

I did wonder.....while buying a bottle of water and getting a free broadsheet newspaper it was imperative that I produced a boarding pass.....not neccesarily MY boarding pass - anyone would do....I won't be trying so hard in future

After many of us deciding to risk the water cannon by refusing to show our boarding passes at Gatwick, we were denied our moment of rebel glory by Boots deciding not to ask for them in the first place! WH Smith on the other hand had a hard time when people refused at the self service check out! People power won mainly, as long as they stuck to their point, with some of them actually presenting the write up from The Independent newspaper!
