Can I just say, you people are marvellous I have a pretty high level of anxiety about making myself understood when asking for bus tickets/taxis and was thinking about getting to Llenaire for drinks at Embat and - lo and behold, here's how to say it. Ta muchly, font of all PP knowledge!

Just out of curiosity, one that I wasn't sure of last year - Gotmar? Is it Gommar?

Oh and what about Moll - Moy?

Some signs say Gommar and some say Gotmar so either is correct and Moll is definitely Moy.

I believe two "ll"s together are always pronounced as a "y".

If "ll" is pronounced "y", the it's definitely not a welsh dependency - although there is an awful lot of lamb on the menus.

Or is that goat??

The brother in law comes from Soller. His surname starts with the double L. The L is pronounced as though the second L wasnt there. So, Llobera - pronounced Lobera.

I wonder if there's a difference in pronunciation between Mallorcan/Catalan and Castilian?

Have to say that I probably agree with Scouse Mark i.e. the pronunciation will surely be different depending upon what time of day it is, where you are coming from, and how many you had consumed!!!

As I understand it - very different. The thing to remember is that Mallorquin is a different language, not just a dialect of Castillian. I think the 'll' pronounced as 'y' is only in Castillian.

It's a dialect of Catalan. I remember there was some considerable discontent over the regional government making "pure" Catalan the official language. As I recall, it meant that schools would have to teach in Catalan, rather than Mallorquin. Which had the effect that, effectively, three languages had to be learned, rather than two.

I remember seeing that. Rather strange, the Balearic Government (I assume it was them) doing that. Or was it because otherwise there would have been too many languages, assuming that there would be pressure from the other islands to recognise their dialects as well?
