We halved our spending last year by eating out every other night - did a supermarket shop and cooked spag bol which we ate on our balcony overlooking the pool - grilled fish with herbs and roasted peppers from the fish counter and a lovely veg lasagne from the amazing stall in the market. Still had our evening stroll down the pine walk and finished off with the regulation ice cream cone!

we also stocked up with supermarkets "own" brand in most things...also found the fresh chickens good value (usually about 4 euros)...slow roasted with lemons/garlic. it easliy fed 4 of us with enough for lunch the following day..fresh mince also 4 euros a pack...more than enough to make a big pot of chilli or spag bog for 4 and enough left over to freeze for another meal...pork chops also very reasonable..lovely fresh salads, vegetables etc. Also salamis/chorizo and other meats and local cheeses very reasonable too...with a couple of the local barapan we had a very cheap lunch most days too....oh dear i wish i was back...it has rained every day since Sunday

If you are a bit hesitant about going to the fresh food counter in Eroski most things that they have there is also prepacked in the chilled cabinet just behind in the centre isle at the same price, all fresh - meats, cheeses, bbq stuff, etc. Try the local cheeses with fresh local bread 'bara' and quince jelly, pre packed in a small slab, and a glass of rose - take it home first of course

Happy hols - you will love it!

P.S. - The little bar around the corner from Golondrinas, "Aries" is great value and you get lots of locals in there too - mainly tradesmen but good atmosphere.

Probably about a 5 / 10 minute walk but the bus stop is not far from Golondrinas or Eroski, so if you have heavy shopping you would find it easier than carrying it back. I think it would only be about a € fare.

The Codfather does cook a very nice fish and chips (comparable to any good chippy in the UK) but I wouldn't say it was cheap. From memory for fish, chips, bread & butter, cup of tea/coffee about 12€ each. You have of course got to consider their costs as they use cod/plaice and British vinegar, teabags/coffee etc. The new setting is lovely though, with the option of sitting in their open courtyard.

There is, as you say, a 10% discount on takeaways.

There is certainly a big difference between the cost of eating out and on your own balcony.

Plenty of great value Menu Del Dia restos around and well noted elsewhere on the forum, with some good ones shown earlier in the thread.

Typically less than 20E per head, including drinks, so budget 80E for eating a MDD out at a resto. If you do this every 2nd or 3rd night and have a nice spag bol, pasta carbonara with garlic bread, cooked chicken with salad in between you'll be fine.

Living like this means you can come in off a hot beach day and just chill out, rather than rush to put on your best gear etc, which becomes less fun if you do it every night.

We always go to the big Alcampo supermarket near Palma as the prices there are a fraction of Port prices...particularly regarding wine (which we drink plenty of), but also staple things like the 5litre waters etc.

It's easy to buy drinks, snacks, sweets and ice creams on the beach, but it will cost a premium which mounts up when multiplied by 4 of a family and the length of your holiday.

If you take these points on board, you'll feel more in tune with the place and can easily manage to have a great time on less than 100E a day.

On the other hand it is easy to say "who cares?..I'll spend what I like!" - in which case you can go mad and spend £250 a day!!

Have a great holiday!

Sometimes its just the little things that can make a saving over 2 weeks...5ltr bottles of water in one of the small supermarkets like Spar are anything between 1.50 and 3 euros..a 1.5 ltr bottle 1 euro and baguettes 85cents to 1.10 - .We could go through at least one 5ltr bottle of water a day and sometimes bought 1 or 2 bottles of water for the beach every day (there were 4 of us) but this year by going to Eroski most days we were getting the 5 ltr bottles of water for 85cents and bagettes (bara) 45cents..bought a couple 1.5 ltr bottles of water for 50cents then topped them up daily for use on the beach so we were saving 3 or 4 euros a day...it doesnt sound much but over 2 weeks it soon mounts up .
