Default Why so many ways to spell the name of the place?

On the day the heavens opened, I started to read the “Holiday in Puerto Pollensa” magazine. From cover to cover. Including all the adverts. Yes, I know I’m sad – but it was very wet outside.

And what struck me was the number of different spellings for the place that the advertisers had included for their address.

I know that it’s Port de Pollenca in Catalan and Puerto Pollensa in Castilian. I must admit I’d always assumed (wrongly) the Pollenca spelling to be the Castilian version as I think the cedilla (under the “C”) is more common in that language.

However, there seems to be lots of other versions in the adverts and I wonder if folk with better knowledge of the area can explain why so many. And, yes, being very very sad, I did count them:-

Port de Pollenca 23
Puerto Pollensa 19
Puerto Pollenca 9
Puerto de Pollensa 3
Puerto de Pollenca 3
Port Pollenca 2
Port Pollensa 1
Port de Pollensa 1
