Nadal - Wimbledon

Congrats to Rafa Nadal for winning Wimbledon - the Mallorcan boy done good. What a few weeks its been for Spanish sport.

Yveee:) 07-07-2008 16:52

Nadal has the most amazing tan . Well done boy !
Yve:)

ann 07-07-2008 17:53

nadal

When Spain reached the finals of the European football tournament, local Mallorquins went Spanish overnight. Catalan flags replaced by Spanish ones and flown from balconies and cars. When Spain won the final the town went wild, rockets going off, cars touring the town hooting their horns etc etc all night long.
Last night, after local boy Nadal triumphed at Wimbledon, there was nothing. No cheering from nearby bars, not a single damp squib of a firework, nothing.
What a shame, and I wonder why. Wimbledon has to be every bit as prestigious in the tennis world as the European cup in football (if not more so). Were Nadal's local supporters too exhausted to cheer?

Sparky 07-07-2008 18:06

Strange isn't it Ann, but i would bet at least one local was celebrating. That would be Bernie the son of Leo from El Ancla, he is a massive tennis and Nadal fan.:D

Linzzzz 07-07-2008 20:52

That is very strange. Last Sept I was in the Pollensa square & Nadal was there filming a hair commercial & it was pretty much hysteria there! He was completely mobbed, so I'm very surprised there hasn't been much of a celebration over his Wimbledon win.

CocoPuff 08-07-2008 09:47

Ann. the problem is here in Mallorca, when it comes to football, everyone goes mad, notice how when there are any big games on, all the bars are full, when the tennis is on... barely anything. i myself am not a big football fan but i do moonlight in a bar, and il tell you, the football final was a nightmare on the staff side, the day of th tennis, you wouldnt know he was playing... sad but true!

Labore 02-07-2010 11:15

World Cup / Wimbledon

Could be a repeat of 2 years ago in terms of being a good summer for Spanish sport with both Spain and Nadal in contention for top honours. I'm really hoping Spain make the world cup final as I arrive in PP the day before and I'm sure it will be a great occasion if Spain can make it.

sws97sdg 02-07-2010 11:45

Very envious Labore, it will be great if Spain get through to the final. Just a quick plug, there is a Spanish forum at the Tapas Bar where you can follow Spain’s progress in the world cup, Rafa's grand slam matches and also full weekly updates of the La Liga results as well as other sports if anyone is interested.

Deanscroft 02-07-2010 12:38

Let us not forget Jorge Lorenzo from Manacor who is at present running away with the World Motorcycle Grand Prix Championship.

suemo 02-07-2010 20:51

He hasn't won it yet! He beat Andy Murray this afternoon to get into the final !

Sue x.

BonysLad 02-07-2010 21:04

Sue,

Quite right he hasn't yet, but he will be be back in Manacor either Monday or Tuesday ( he always comes straight back to Mallorca ) . Such a modest , lovely lad . He always signs himself in everyday at the Manacor tennis club whenever he is home .

Can you see those overpaid English footie t**ssers doing that ???

BonysLad :):)

Get that Lotto on Labore......you can predict the future!!:D

Rab 06-07-2010 08:42

If (and I think its a big if) Spain beat Germany will PP do anything exciting for the final? A big screen in the square/beach?

Where would be the best bars to watch it?

Sparky?

Sparky 06-07-2010 10:00

Rab, i have not heard of any plans for this but it seems like almost every restaurant and bar now have TVs with many of these outside.

Belladonna 06-07-2010 10:52

Outside! You have got to be kidding me!

Sparky 06-07-2010 11:01

I am afraid not Bella :(, i wonder what is going to happen to all the TVs when it is all over .

Belladonna 06-07-2010 12:37

Hopefully they will all go back in the attico! Or will they just find another reason to keep them outiside until the rain starts again!?
It really does irritate me when restaurants inflict things on people outside the confines of their own building.

Sparky 06-07-2010 13:15

I really don't think restaurants are a suitable place for TVs . It would give me terrible indigestion if i watched footy, tennis or any sport while dining.;)

Belladonna 06-07-2010 14:54

Absolutely right. Hopefully it's just bars that have the TVs on of course, restaurants don't usually inflict too much that is irritating - other than billboards that you trip over perhaps, or waiters that stand outside trying to drag you in!

Again sorry Bella but there are some restaurants who have succumbed to World Cup Fever. I am just praying it is not going to become the "NORM".

sws97sdg 06-07-2010 16:03

As usual there are two sides to this, if people didn't want to watch TV the owners wouldn't feel like they needed to put them up, truth is some people like to watch sport when they go out to eat, simple as. I am sure they will come down after the football has finished, anyway you can always sit with you back to them which is what the wife does! luckily :). Anyway back on topic didn't Nadal play well, great performance all tournament?

Sparky 06-07-2010 16:12

Yes he did and congratulations to him.:D

Belladonna 06-07-2010 16:36

PLEASE don't open that can of worms sws! Bars are for drinks and sport; resturants are for food and talk. I know this discussion could degenerate until it is closed, I just hope good restaurants will remain TV free, the bars can then carry on giving food as well for those who prefer a bit of everything.

Gommar Goffer 06-07-2010 16:51

Sorry Bella - even Can Joseph had a large TV at the front of the restaurant facing the terrace and road!

eleanor 06-07-2010 16:52

Totally agree with Bella. If I go out to eat or drink it is to leave the television behind and to have a good social time with whom ever I am with. Personally I can't stand the noise or intrusion of a television in the background but thats my opinion.
That will not change be it for football, tennis or anything else. Many I know will as Bella says, disagree but i'm with her on this one.

Get real Girls, This is the World Cup and once every four years . Nobody here would have been in a restaurant if that Lampard goal had stood ...... and we were in the semis this week ......

These TVs are for the benefit of the staff as much as the tourists . just look at the support here for Argentina, Uruguay , Chile not to mention Spain. Nobody would turn up for work on footy nights ( wat happened in the UK that Wed afternoon against Slovenia , eh !!!! ) .

Sparky , Did you see the huge Argentina Flag drag down the fiesta bunting in the square after the Germany game ??? . And boy didn't realise there were so many Uruguyians here as well, if they win tonight head for the square .

It's a brilliant , international event , that many love

Yours ( dining on the pavements for the next two nights !!! )

BonysLad :):)

cherylbb 06-07-2010 16:55

Yes, well done Rafa! Hope he's enjoying some R & R in Manacor!

Sparky 06-07-2010 16:58

OK guys i know i have been guilty of posting off topic on this one as well but the thread really is about Nadal winning Wimbledon. We can still post our views about TV's in restaurants in PP but please start another thread and leave this one for the Wimbledon Champion of 2010.
Thank you for your co-operation.;)

eleanor 06-07-2010 17:00

OK - BL - I get you point BUT does it have to be every bar and restaurant?

The problem is it doesn't end with the match, does it? My husband and son will go on and on taking apart every bit of any match just for the sake of it. SO even when the match is over it goes on for ever. Yeh 4 years multiplied by God knows how many more talking about it lol

OH DEAR - I feel the steam from a few ears coming my way lol

SORRY Sparky posts passed - point taken

Surely, tennis and football should be discussed in the Tapas bar and not on the main PP forum. Getting a bit tedious now having to watch it on telly and also read about it on the forum.:(

sws97sdg 07-07-2010 12:18

Hopefully Whaley that will happen now with the new thread regarding TV's in restaurants, and as you say please join us in the Tapas Bar to discuss Spain’s and Englands continued successes in world sport, follow the link below, all welcome.

Smiddy 07-07-2010 18:29

Nadal ,TV's etc

As BL would say, calm down, me dears! The Tv's will all disappear after Sunday, having just returned from PP, yes they are a lot around, but they weren't everywhere, if you wanted to avoid the footie there were places to dine, O' Lume for one! Interestingly, with the amount of nationalities now living in PP there was always someone happy with their result, driving around pumping horns and waving their little flags. Don't let anyones dislike of football put you off, the World Cup greatly enhanced my stay there, it created a wonderfull atmosphere. Unfortunately, i've just arrived home now, but just away to sit in front of my tele;) to cheer on the Spanish boys. Going by the noise on Saturday night, i shudder to think what it will be like if they actualy win the thing:eek::eek:
