Default Spending money

We (my wife, one year old son and I) are going to PP on the 15th May and staying at Club De Sol for two weeks. I'd like to know how much spending money would be suffice? How much would a meal for two and a bottle of (nice) local wine cost us etc? Any information would help.

Hi there,

& welcome to the forum. If you are talking about eating out in local restaurants then have a look at the menus on our restaurants page www.puertopollensa.com/restaurants_bars_cafes.html but basically you can spend anything from around 9 euros for a Menu del Dia (mainly lunch times) to 25-30 for something special. Set Menus at night start at around 10 euros & may or may not include wine. A set menu is a lot better value than A la Carte, as in most places.

Thanks for information. Just like to know i'll be bringing enough €s to spend. What about taking traveller cheques etc?
Would it be best to take all cash?
Can't wait now

I have to say that I've never used traveller's cheques in Mallorca but I think it depends on how tightly you want to control your spending.

I've always just taken a few euros to start with (Post Office & M&S supposedly have good rates) & then just used my normal Barclays Debit card at cash machines & sometimes my Credit Card in restaurants, supermarket etc.

If you do use a Credit Card, do remember that some places including the Caprablo supermarket ask to see your passport as Id. Also inform your CC issuer e.g. Barclaycard first that you may be using it abroad.

So are there plenty of ATM machines around? I was wondering if it was safe to take all cash!

We've always done the same as Pollensa - taken some Euros to tide us over and then used the cash points.

However, some banks charge for this service. I saw this article:

www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=448760&in_page_id=1770

Nationwide don't charge at all so if you don't bank with them it might be worth opening an account.

Hi - We have always taken some Euro's for the first few days and cash as there are a number of places that give a good rate of exchange (commission free) and of course use the cash points too if needed...

In my experiance the Post Office not the best, M&S OK, but , surprisingly, if you have one of these Csah Convertor shops near you (plenty in Glasgow) they offer the best rates.

Try the travel money card from the post office works very well and rates ok plus the charges are good and you can use it in ATM'S and pay at bars etc.

Also when using your switch, credit card in a shop or at the atm, remember to select the Euro option as the exchange rate they give for a pounds transaction is much poorer than your UK bank. Nationwide are the best UK bank for international cash withdrawals, with absolutely no hidden charges.

I have found ordering cash online to pick up at the airport as you depart offers a great rate of exchange. Then like most use the cashline card.
