Default pollensa town square

Does anyone know what the banner on the wall 1937 to 2007 in the square in pollensa is to do with?

Default Pollensa Town Square

I shall rise above the insults. I am bigger than this (and no comments please!)

I've been wondering what the large poster is about too.
Seriously, does anyone have any idea?
It's on the left-hand side as you go towards the church.

Cheers!

Frito.

It's the 70th anniversary.
You would have thought one of these PP cocooned bods would have known that would'nt you, but after 6 days .... all's quiet on the western front.

Could be something to do with the Spanish Civil War (1936 - 39) The prison at Albercutz seems to be dated 1937 - maybe something to do with when Mallorca was liberated?

Hi All
Looked up the sign in my phrase book when I was there, I think it means 70 years of injustice and 70 years of shame, it must refer to the civil war, I wanted to ask one of the locals but didn't, not sure why its 70 years as since Franco died surely the shame and injustice ended then?

The sign refers to several houses in the square (Illetes) which are literally falling down because of rules laid down in 1937 forbidding any refurbishment in an attempt to keep the square authentic.

The sign is therefore a protest against these rules:

70 anys dŽinjusticia
70 anys de vergonya

70 years of injustice and shame.

We asked the very friendly waiter at the Cafe Espanyol what it meant and he explained.

We thought it was a good thing that the square remained unspoiled but he said that these isolated houses (i.e. Illetes or islands) are terrible to live in.

You're welcome, Frito!

I would have wondered as well, because most nights we were sitting opposite the sign and it would have bugged the life out of me!

An update to this story, the old building in the corner of the square this sign was about has now almost been transformed into a new restaurant/deli, I was speaking to the owner of Numero Ocho and he said it is soon to be open, it looks very smart and modern inside, it has a lift to all three floors, they were spending all week working on the door/artwork outside, looks impressive, would love to hear from someone when it opens, its name, style of food.

Have to disagree on this as we thought the building looked totally out of place in the square and almost obliterates the entrance to the church. It has no character at all...looks like a prison block How they ever got planning to build it is beyond me!

agree with Debz on this one - bet porridge is on the menu! Place looks horrid and certainly not at all inviting!
Wonder if they had an architect? - lol Perhaps it may be obvious as to how they got planning Debz! Money talks a quick tongue! lol

Architecture is very subjective and opinion of same is very personal. I certainly don’t think that the said building is great by any means, in fact it’s not (got the windows wrong for starters!), but good modern architecture can and does have its place and can be successfully integrated along with the old. People forget - or don’t realise - that even the very oldest of buildings were modern when they were built. Do people really want all old towns to be living museums? Can you honestly say old is always good? I would say it certainly isn’t. Somewhere like Pollensa Town is very special though and great care should be taken. Don’t think ‘Planning’ is as strict as in the U.K.
The world, including Pollensa must move on. Sometimes difficult to grasp when you visit once or twice a year on holiday, but people also have to live / work there. Even though they may look ‘quaint’ many old buildings, often in countries like Spain, are literally dropping apart. You’ve all seen them I’m sure. Even the new ones are built to standards that are totally unacceptable in the U.K. (yes, I do understand the climate is different). They might look O.K. but structurally and in many other ways they are often not. If buying in Pollensa, in P.P. or anywhere else in Spain for that matter, remember the old saying - ‘caveat emptor’ - let the buyer beware.
