Sea Plane/Flying Boats

I'm not sure we ever decided what to call them, so i've titled the thread with both.

Is it my imagination, or did i spot a new one today?

Sounded noisier, flew faster and seemed to be painted slightly differently, a bit more yellow i think.

Anyone got any proper info?

C

There's an article here about them getting new sea planes in the future, but I wonder If you have seen one of the Bombardier 415 that they have in their fleet?

It is the same type of plane, however when I was at the open day a couple of weeks ago my friend who knows a lot about the planes said the one that was on display had not been here before.

Could someone Get some paint from the base and repaint the rusty one on the Roundabout.
in a few years it will crash because of the RUST.

Spain's Air Safety Agency has given permission for civilian seaplanes to land in Pollensa Bay. The president of the Majorca Aeronautical Foundation, Miquel Buades, says that a report received from the agency on Monday states that a maximum of fifty seaplanes per annum will be able to land. Agreement has also been obtained from the air force base.

For Buades, this was "great news". With the permission, Majorca will be pioneering in having the first port in Spain where civilian seaplanes can land. The foundation has proposed that Puerto Pollensa be a centre for pilot training, so this can now happen. ...

...

The report stresses that seaplanes are not for commercial flights. There had been a proposal for a seaplane service to link Pollensa with Formentera.

Seaplane use in Pollensa Bay is currently confined to firefighting planes and to the Splash-In event, for which special permission has been required.

The seaplane is flying this morning

Luckjon 15-01-2020 17:09

I was surprised to see it land yesterday afternoon and doing circuit and bumps this morning. I thought that they normally arrived around easter.

There were a couple of small fires over the christmas period in Pollenca and Soller. Maybe they sent it for a service early and have got it back ready just in case.

Or maybe it's in case those Sant Antoni fires get out of control ;)

When are the locals ever in control of their pyrotechnics???:D

Sparky 12-02-2020 17:01

The sea planes have been flying in and out for hours today. Don't know if it's a training exercise or if there is a fire somewhere :confused:.

PPToni 12-02-2020 20:14

I follow the Delfin team on Instagram and asked them. Nothing to worry about, its definitely just training 👍

Retirement of Dornier Do-24T to be marked next Friday

Quote:

Pollensa will be marking the retirement 50 years ago of the Dornier Do-24T sea-plane which was based in Pollensa for many years. The only flying Do-24T is expected to take part in the events next Friday from 10a.m.

Hundreds of people owe their lives to the search and rescue aircraft including aircrew from both sides in the Second World War. A Canadair seaplane based in Pollensa is also expected to take part.

The event is organized by the Mallorcan Aeronautical Foundation in collaboration with the SAE. It will be on Friday 6 August in the Port of Pollença from 12.00 in the morning.

12.00 Departure of the Canadair from the Military base and aerial evolution of the means that the Air Force makes available for the scheduled event

Since arriving at the weekend haven’t seen any seaplanes in the bay. Is it too early in the season for them to take up their ‘summer residency’?

Sparky 16-05-2023 15:17

They are here;).

Gommar Goffer 17-05-2023 08:08

They have been about. Maybe they are training somewhere else at the moment.

Luckjon 17-05-2023 12:44

You should have been here in April. For most of the month there were two planes doing their annual pre-season training. On one occasion they flew in formation the whole length of the bay and released the water simultaneously. Of course it was the one occasion when I didn't have camera with me.

My son managed to get a video of that when they were here. Looked really spectacular. The old place just isn’t the same at the moment without the plane!

There’s an article in the MDB about making the military base at PP a Mediterranean base for sea planes.

They've been talking about it for years!

So much for my afternoon naps on the beach. I do not object to the firefighting planes as they are providing a service but other arrivals will not benefit Pollensa as the occupants will no doubt not stay local but wizz off to other island resorts where they can enjoy being seen.

mike_dublin 31-03-2024 12:35

I think your afternoon beach naps are safe. The chances of any or too many sea planes disrupting it are remote, I'd say.
