Tsunami?!!!!.

We have had a mini tsunami this morning, it's called a Rissaga, no damage or injuries but it was worse in Alcudia with some flooding on the front line .

Why did it happen? Looked quite scary on Alcudia photos. Did we get a big wave on Pine Walk? Thanks!

No big wave, this might help :-

In a rissaga this area can go from running out of water to flooding the sidewalks.
A rissaga or meteotsunami is a coastal meteorological phenomenon that causes a very strong variation of the high tide .

In rissagas, sea level oscillations occur in ports, coves or bays, motivated by meteorological causes such as strong winds in the troposphere , warm air at low levels of the atmosphere and weak or moderate at the surface, and that in conditions of resonance, that is, sudden rise and fall of the sea level in a very short time (minutes or even seconds) that, when they are very intense, usually cause damage to the ships that are moored and flooding in the port infrastructures.

Wow!! Thanks for the information. We were visiting a friend in Alcudia on Thursday & were right by the boardwalk in Alcudia.

Many years ago we were sat at Joker Bar on the front- not sure what it is called now!- having lunch in July. Suddenly the wind blew and the sea had massive waves trapping people in the sea. Many people were hurt. As suddenly as it started it stopped. Very strange. The beach was also covered with sea water. Maybe this was similar to what happened in Alcudia although the video does look awful.

These are quite normal in the Baleares, more so in Minorca where it empties the harbour in Ciutadella. The fisherman (as always) are the only people over there who seem to know exactly when this occurs.

There's a rissaga forecast system for the Balearics. It includes an interesting video:
