Default Holiday tax

Is there any news of the proposed tax on visitors to the island? There are rumours that if applied it could be up to 2 euros per person per night, has anyone any confirmation about when or if this is going to happen? thanks.

The official line is that it will start in July and be around the amount you say with vat added also, holiday companies are warning customers they will need to pay it at source, i.e. the hotals will collect it like they do in other countries, it is unclear how it will be collected in rental property, but hopefully if you rent one via someone you 'know' you will not be charged the tax, that is what I am hoping anyway

Thanks Sparky though it is still not that clear to me as I am not aware of which star or key rating our apartment is if any - it is just a small private block though it does feature on booking websites. Also we depart on 4th July so would we pay for 4 days? Hopefully it will become clearer in due course.

It is all becoming quite stressful this year - tourist tax, roadworks and pavements and now ice-cream, I will have to drink plenty of the cold white stuff to get me through the holiday haha! (and I don't mean milk!).

As it stands at the moment you won't pay if it's a private rental because they are not licensed (in other words they are illegal), however the government are looking into changing the law on this.

I received the following notification from Jet2holidays:-

Dear David,

Firstly, may we take the opportunity to thank you for booking your holiday to Majorca with Jet2holidays.

We always try to ensure that we keep customers up to date with information relating to their holiday and it is for this reason we are writing to you.

We have been informed by our team in resort that the Spanish authorities have introduced a new tax. From 1st July 2016 customers visiting the Balearics (Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza) will be required to pay a Sustainable Tourism Tax.

The amount of the tax depends on the Star rating of the hotel, and will range from €1 - €2 per person per day. Children under age of 16 are exempt from the tax and long term holiday makers will have a 50% discount on the tax from the ninth day of their stay.

In low season (November 1st - April 3rd), there will be a 50 % discount.

The tax will be collected by the hotel/apartments during your stay; please ensure you have sufficient funds with you to pay this tax.

This email is for your information only and no response is required.

Please note that we are only able to discuss the booking with the lead name, and unable to discuss with other members of your party. If you have booked through a Travel Agent then please contact them directly.

Yours sincerely,

The Operations team

Thats great to get it in writing, but just to confirm, where it said apartments it means licensed one like the Habitat apartments who have a reception, the money will be collected there I assume, and not 'private rentals' where the money will not be collected, yet!!
