Default Christmas in Pollenca

Would like some help please. We're thinking of coming over for a week sometime over the Christmas period, and the first question is Apartment or Hotel. Quite a bit of discussion on the forum re cold/damp in apartments that time of year. I wouldn't expect owners to keep the heating on all year, if place is empty. Once occupied however, would most of them warm up quite quickly, or would it be preferable to stay in a Hotel? (Illa Dor and Sis Pins are both open over Christmas)

Come to that, how cold is it in PP in mid-December? I appreciate one won't be sitting on the beach all day, but December in Majorca can't possibly be the same as December in the UK. (From comments on here, it would seem February is the coldest month).

Also, just how busy will the Port be. I can't see us having to scramble for a restaurant table at 8.00 in the evening, but again, I imagine not too many establishments will be open.

Lastly, where would you recommend eating Christmas Day, and would there be more people about/better atmosphere lunchtime or evening, (we can't have every meal at Stay but it's on the list! )

Any advice/comments greatly appreciated.

Some of the restaurants close the kitchens at about 4pm on Christmas Day. Those open usually have special menu's for Christmas and always advisable to book as the locals will be out with their families.

Nice to hear you might come out for Christmas Pinewalker but the Illa D'or will be closed.

Weather wise, last year Christmas week was very good with daytime highs in the high teens to low 20's but obviously chilly at night.

I will post restaurants opening info as and when I get it but it depends on what you want to eat.....traditional British or traditional Spanish???. There isn't much open in the evening of 25th.

The main point about Christmas here is that it is very quiet and not at all commercialised like in the UK, we do have some festive lights but nothing on the scale of Regent/Oxford street in London .

Hi Pinewalker,

We are in the area 19th to 24th Dec. This will be our second visit at this time of year. In 2009 we stayed 26th to 31st Dec.

Last time we rented an apartment in the old town. The apartment wasn't damp but we did need to use the electric radiators in the evening. The apartment had large sliding glass doors facing south which helped to keep the lounge and kitchen warm during the day.
It was quite cold at times, on most photos I am wearing a coat but I also have photos in just T shirt and jeans. It didn't rain and the sun was usually shining. We had a fab time.
This year we have opted for a property with central heating. It's a town house in the pueblo. We have rented properties in November and February also and have learned that some sort of heating, preferable CH is a must. AC on heat mode doesn't have the same effect and we are useless at making up real fires in log burners! (More smoke that fire) . We have rented extra radiators from Multi Hire before now but I understand they are closing for the winter this year.
We stayed at the Galeon in November last year (end of month) and to be honest I thought it was very cold. The air con worked poorly on heat mode and only when you were in the room with your plastic key in the slot, no CH. We used the Jacuzzi to warm up each evening! There was nowhere to dry towels and they were only replaced every other day unless you asked. However, Sis Pins has much smaller rooms which should stay warmer, even better if the hotel has CH.
If it was just the two of us I expect we would book Sis Pins, looks great!

Hi Pinewalker, we go with an apartment through this site, this will be our 3rd winter break and we have found this apartment is fine, no damp and the heating is great. The heating is via aircon so it blows hot air in all the rooms and warms up very quickly and keeps it very toasty!
The weather can be changeable so you need coats and scarfs for the evening but if the sun shines it can get quiet warm, I even swam in the sea one year!
Lots of place staying open this year, check Sparky's list to see which ones, so plenty of options. You will find a big difference from the summer, but still lots going on with the locals out an about more, I prefer to think of the place having a rest and taking it easy, don't think of it being asleep!
