THERE'S nothing like the chilly winds of winter to make you start thinking about summer holidays and for many Scots that can only mean Majorca.

Puerto Pollensa in particular has very strong Scottish connections stretching back for nearly 50 years but it’s not just about the summer sun, as more and more visitors are making the trip at other times of the year.

This lovely, friendly little town has been the destination of choice for Scots since the first few pioneers discovered the joy of holidaying there in the 1960s and it’s fair to say there’s a definite tartan influence going on here.

The now defunct Globespan furthered the Scottish link by tempting many retired Scots to spend the winter in its hotels, enjoying the gentler weather and shunning the cold at home.

While these hotels are now independently owned, they remain popular with Scots who have retained links there for generations, while football fans in both countries boast even stronger connections.

This was well illustrated by the number of Barcelona supporters from Puerto Pollensa who reached Parkhead for the 2013 Celtic-Barcelona Champions League match.

Sport also features strongly in Puerto Pollensa with triathlon and Ironman courses, which again tend to be out of high season, though cycling holidays are becoming more and more popular throughout the year.

Festivals are also a big draw, with the first fiesta of the year taking place over January 16 and 17.

Small bonfires are lit on the first day and traditional songs sung in celebration of San Anton, the patron saint of animals.

The Pollensa Music Festival has been taking place in the town every July and August for over 50 years, attracting some major names.

Returning visitors are very common in Puerto Pollensa, with clients booking for the high season and adding a couple of weeks late autumn or early in the year for an extra break.

In the summer, it is a different place, buzzing with excitement and activity and managing to appeal to all age groups.

The restaurants and cafes beside the tree-lined Pine Walk offer a superb view of the bay, with luxury yachts side by side with tiny pedalos and daring jet skiers.

Some people happily spend their holiday pottering around the swimming pools at their apartments, venturing out only to enjoy a peaceful walk or stock up on food and drink from one of the many supermarkets throughout the town, while others spend their time eating out and making the most of the beach and a range of sporting and leisure activities.

An excellent bus service across the island makes historically interesting areas, carnivals, festivals, markets and a range of waterparks easily accessible.

Evenings are usually spent wandering along the Pine Walk admiring magical sandcastles being painstakingly constructed, having a leisurely meal or milling round the vibrant market square with its lively pubs, traditional tapas bars and a couple of nightclubs.

It’s not unusual to see a crowd of small boys of every nationality on the beach at night enjoying the universal language of football until it’s too dark to see the ball and the lights and music start to fade away into the early hours.

Throughout the area, there is a constant Scottish presence, not just among tourists but in the many businesses there, with restaurants like Trios owned by Juan and Catherine, who moved there from Scotland over 30 years ago.

Laguna Bar & Restaurant is also owned by Scots, Jim and Judy MacSorley, whose star visitor so far has been Jim’s cousin Gerard Butler.

Angie at El Posito is also from Glasgow, as is local entertainer Dennis Dobbin who does Elvis and Rock ’n’ Roll shows in bars throughout the summer.

The new and very popular Ruta del Tapeo – Tapas Route – through the town was launched by Scot Denise Marti, who has lived there for around 20 years with Majorcan husband Miguel.

There is a lively network of both Scots and English, making life easy for visitors with communications up-to-date and easily accessible.

Talk of the North is a free, fortnightly newspaper for British residents in the north of Majorca, with 1000 copies distributed every fortnight in Pollensa, Puerto Pollensa, Alcudia, Puerto Alcudia, Playa de Muro and Can Picafort.

The blogspot address is Talk of the North and you can find them on Facebook.

The HOT guide is the latest publication from the same company and is a free tourist guide distributed in the same area as Talk of the North. See thehotguide.blogspot.com.es/ and on Facebook.
