We (2 adults and 3 kids) returned last week from 2 weeks in a very rural villa near pollensa and none of us had a single bite. The only thing we do is use one of the liquid 'bug plugs' (Jungle formula) bought from boots/superdrug in each bedroom. Switch it on in early evening and off in morning.

Have noticed the Mosquitos are already out and about ! This has just been posted on FB by Can Balache.

HOMEMADE MOSQUITO TRAP:
Items needed:
1 cup of water
1/4 cup of brown sugar
1 gram of yeast
1 2-liter bottle

HOW:
1. Cut the plastic bottle in half.
2. Mix brown sugar with hot water. Let cool. When cold, pour in the bottom half of the bottle.
3. Add the yeast. No need to mix. It creates carbon dioxide, which attracts mosquitoes.
4. Place the funnel part, upside down, into the other half of the bottle, taping them together if desired.
5. Wrap the bottle with something black, leaving the top uncovered, and place it outside in an area away from your normal gathering area. (Mosquitoes are also drawn to the color black.)

Change the solution every 2 weeks for continuous control.

That's a good idea

If I pack a little packet of yeast in my suitcase my wife will think I am going to be baking bread on holiday. (I do bake bread often but not on holiday)

Pictures to follow after our May holiday to see if anything is captured.

The problem with having warm wind and rain for a couple of days, then no breeze and sunshine is that when you then leave the windows open at night, the flipping mozzies love it!! If you are coming out soon, please remember the anti mozzie plug ins etc, or whatever you prefer to use to keep them at bay when you sleep ~ or try to!

This is a bit worrying, from the Majorca Daily Bulletin

Quote:
MAJORCA ON TIGER MOSQUITO ALERT

Palma

.—Santa Maria Council has signed up to the atrapaeltigre.com (catchatiger.com) campaign after the first Tiger mosquito eggs were found in Santa Maria this week.

"This year we are going to be monitoring their breeding patterns and breeding zones very closely in order to improve our measures of prevention," the local councillor for the environment, Guillem Ramis explained.

A week ago, a team of experts from Barcelona visited Santa Maria market to inform the general public about the atrapaeltigre.com campaign.

The idea of the initiative to involve the general public in reporting any sightings of Tiger mosquitoes so the authorities can then respond to the problem.

The Tiger mosquito is native to the tropical and subtropical areas of Southeast Asia; however, in the past couple of decades this species has invaded many countries throughout the world through the transport of goods and increasing international travel.

This mosquito has become a significant pest in many communities because it closely associates with humans (rather than living in wetlands), and typically flies and feeds in the daytime in addition to at dusk and dawn.

The insect is called a Tiger mosquito because its striped appearance is similar to that of a tiger.

They also carry a number of viral diseases.

I sympathize with El G. Always got eaten alive by them and had bad reaction but since moving here they don't bother me as much and the bites disappear in a couple of days.
However the "Tiger" is in a different league .

Agree prevention is better than cure but if you are affected by the little pests I thoroughly recommend Benadryl 1 a day from Boots/chemists - the stinging and itching literally stops within 10-15 mins of taking a tablet. No itching means no scratching and therefore no inflammation and infection, so well worth taking them at first sign of a bite. Was out in PP a few weeks ago and one of the nasty beggars buzzed my face at night - it met a violent end but not until after it had had supper on me! Then there was the curtain to wash!! Hey ho! Plug-ins a great help and must update mine for next visit in a few weeks!

I wonder if the Avon Dry Oil sprays works with these.

Agreed and it works, my wife takes them as soon as we arrive to prevent the swellings as she always gets bitten and then scratches which risks infections.

The Benadryl is an expensive brand name, the active ingredient is 10mg Cetirizine Dihydrochloride, £6.99 for 14 tablets at Boots, the same can be found for £1.20 or less for 30 tablets without the brand name.

A google search to find some,
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Ce...en-GB:official
or
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Ce...en-GB:official

or look in supermarkets at own brand products and read the ingredients.

The £6 saving almost pays for coffee and cake for two on pinewalk

This is all very good advice but i am not sure how effective it is against the "TIGER Mosquitos", they are known to carry some very nasty diseases and this is why there is so much concern about them being found on the island.
