You are far more likely to catch it (or countless other things) in the recycled air in the plane than on Mallorca!

This is true, but it would be a good idea to publish any outbreaks for the island. Information only gives out Spain stastics, nothing at all for any of the islands. Perhaps the local papers may have something in them about it?

As far as i know there have been no cases reported on the island, yet!!.
Lets hope it stays that way.

I came across a report from a German paper that stated some of their pupils had come back home from Mallorca with swine flu. There was no more information than that.

...they say there is no scientific evidence that breathing inflight air makes you more at risk of catching a disease - it is stitting next to ill people that is dangerous.

Official advice to stay healthy on the flight turn is off the air vent to avoid breathing other people's air and wash your hands frequently. IMO a trip to a yucky inflight loo is MORE likely to help you catch an infection than anything else!

Really wish I could believe that "scientific evidence", that re-cycled air doesn't contain germs....? Next Easyjet flight I'll ask my next seat neighbour "excuse me...are you ill?" before I sit down.

Being serious....I'm in training now. My objective....to hold my breath for two and a half hours!

Daily Bulletin this morning has an article saying that four more cases of Swine Flu have been confirmed on Mallorca, bringing the total for the Balearic region to 9.

STAFF Swine flu spreading

STAFF REPORTER THE Balearic Ministry for Health yesterday confirmed five new cases of swine flu H1N1 - three men and two women - four on Majorca and one on Minorca. This brings the total in the region since the outbreak of the virus to 9. The ministry said yesterday that two of the cases were confirmed by Son Dureta hospital in Palma and the remaining three by the “flu watch” network set up in local surgeries. A spokesman said that two of the men on Majorca are aged 26 and a third is 63 years-old. The woman is 29 years-old. It has been necessary to hospitalise only one of the younger men. On Minorca, a 23-year-old woman has been affected, the first on the island. The Ministry for Health has already set up 33 “flu watch” points around the Balearic Islands: 27 on Majorca (12 in Palma and 15 in outlying areas); 3 on Minorca and 3 on Ibiza.

I visited my local hospital yesterday, newly built, like a 5 star hotel, wonderful facilities, as i checked if there was a hand dispenser for patients/visitors to use, this i duly did, took a matter of seconds. There was around 40 or so people there all the time i was waiting and i did not see ONE other person use the dispenser. Is it any wonder these type of viruses spread so quickly? and this was from a set of patients whos' personal hygeine was critical at one time during their treatment.

Whilst I appreciate concerns people have, in some cases for good reason but, the vast majority of us need not be concerned about the latest flu outbreak. It will cause no more problems than does a bad cold and a couple of paracetamols and an early night will see it off. Could it just be that in a quiet time for real news, the press is milking this story for all it's worth and scaring the hell out of many people who have no reason to be scared. We've all far more chance of picking up viruses in any big city in this country than we do in Mallorca.
