Default European Health Insurance Card

A brown envelope came in the post yesterday.

From the UK government!
Huh!!>:

The new EHIC as they abbreviate it's name to. Replacing the old E111 forms which should always be taken with you when visiting another European country. That E111 incidentally was a new one introduced in 2005 to replace the previous one and could be got at your UK Post Office. And also the new form would expire on 31 December 2005 after which you had to have the EHIC which has now arrived here for us.

So that's us ready for action!

Individual cards now for everyone just like another bank or credit card. Not like the pre 2005 E111 which covered whole families as named thereon.

Confused or not got an E111? Ask in your Post Office and get your paperwork moving!

And to conclude we have our real names on the new cards !
Thought if had been Portofan the Spanish medics might have looked and said "Ees Portofan do not rescusitate eem"!!

You have a nice day now:rollin :rollin

Hi Trespass!

Thanks for your reply.

Like you I applied in the same way.

There is an expiry date on our cards of 01/12/09 so presumably unless any change of address they will renew at that time unless they change the system.

Default E111

have to admit that we have never had these

Default European Health Card

I was in the Social Security (Health) office in Inca this week.
The Spanish version of the European Health Card was being well advertised. It appears to be coming in at the same time as the U.K. version.

Cheers!

Frito.

Smiddy M8, You may find that your travel insurance company like the vast majority of companies who underwrite policies for travel insurance within EU countries. Their polices do NOT cover you for the medical costs that you will be entitled to from an E111 form. Should you NOT have an E111 form/card then most companies will not pay out for the medical costs that you would have been covered by the E111 form and deduct these costs should you make a claim on your policy.

I know there are some companies who sell travel insurance that write into the policy for EU cover that I you don't have an E111 form/ card the medical cover for that policy is void, this is because their veiw is that you are entitled through your NI contributions to free heath care and it's your resposibility to organise this by carrying an E111 form/card with you.

Please check this out with your travel insurance company, you may find that it's a NO E111 FORM NO COVER policy. I know mine have been!. That is why rest of the world policies are more expensive, their may not be an agreement like the E111 in the countries you visit so the policy is loaded to cover this.

Chat soon.

Hi everyone!

Going to the post office to get an E111 form which is on my looong list of "to do" things for today.

Portofan has already told me off for delaying this far so I'd better go and get one!

We have travel insurance through Tesco's but Hubby had a heart attack four years ago which isn't covered under the policy.

Although he is fine now, it hasn't occurred to me before that he may need hospital treatment so it makes sense to get one and be on the safe side.

Happy holidays!
Jane

Hope you got a E111 form for all your family Jane.

Can I just remind everybody that you really do need to apply for this card before you leave.
You can apply online and it should arrive through the post in a few weeks.
Don't leave home without one!!!!!
Take care.

I remembered to apply for our card in January. I used the DOH website and it was so easy. The cards arrived within a week. Simple!

Thanks for the welcome Robjay. I've been addicted to the site for years, and found it really helpful when looking for property, finding cheap hotels to stay in while viewing and everything else under the sun related to PP. It took me 2 years to log on and post my first message, so I'm not sure how long it'll take me to join a live chat!

Hi Sandy!

Don't wait too long to come in and have a chat.

Once you see a name or two about and they're obviously in the room just pop in, it's very easy and no one will bite!:eek

Surprising the info that one can get in there and you'll almost certainly have a laugh also!:lol
