I think you may need a solicitor to apply for an NIE no,but not really sure as ours was all done when we bought our property. You will have to go to Palma to obtain residencia to the Police dept, there have been earlier posts on what is needed to apply for one, so worth searching under Residencias.

When we bought a property there it was (I am fairly sure) sorted out by our solicitor in conjunction with our managing agent - but we have since lost our NIE numbers and have been told that we will indeed have to go to Palma to get replacements. Apparently this is a slow process often involving a wait of several hours - you need to get there early and be patient!

you don't need a solicitor, but if you don't speak Spanish it's probably the easiest way, and yes you would have to go to Palma otherwise. If not, possibly cheaper than a solicitor a couple of people advertise in the Daily B that they get NIEs etc. The process itself(other than any queuing ) takes about 2minutes!
