Default Winter Weather

I've heard that winters in PdP can be very damp. Is it really bad or bearable? Worse than UK winter?

I've been out in all winter months and it's generally much better than London weather so I suspect much better than Derry too.

December was extreme this year with cold weather and it was a wetter winter than usual.

In my experience, you will risk mild ridicule from locals if you walk round in shorts when it's 20C in January.

For me, the weather from mid-June to mid-September is too hot. I prefer October to May.

My wife spends the UK winter in PP - 3 months usually
occasionally you get storms - worse than the UK - but they only last for 1-2 hours
but generally the temperature is 10-15 degrees warmer than UK
you will often see me in t-shirt and jeans in winter!

Loved the weather in January. Crisp mornings. Rising to 16-18degC in the afternoon and a cool 5-6 overnight. It was great for walking up the hills and warm enough to stay out in the evening with a hoodie on watching the Pi Sant Antoni festival.

December was colder and we got soaked a couple of times but still much nicer than UK!!

Agreed - generally milder but, like anywhere these days, hard to predict. Either way, it's an adventure. This year we are coming out for Xmas and New Year....

We often think that January is one of the best months. The temperature is 10 -15 during the day, but the best thing is the sunshine which makes you feel good compared to those dismal short days back home.

It is much damper than the UK because of the lack of heating generally. You might want to invest in a dehumidifier if the property you are staying in hasn't got any.

Indeed, when I was rushing around buying stuff in early Jan and naturally was wearing shorts and T shirt, as the temp was 23 degs.....I was getting some looks in Al Campo. Everyone was wearing jeans and coats!

The weather was better that week than the weekend we cam back in late March.....that was wet and cold!

Thanks folks- all very encouraging! What a great forum

Interesting to hear comment about dehumidifier- I know that it's warmer and sunnier in PP than UK but I've heard a number of people say that the damp indoors in Winter is a lot higher than UK. Is this because of lack of heating systems/ double glazing or a general phenomenon that can't be avoided.

We're looking at long term rental properties and thinking about requirements for winter.

I was told this by many people but:
1. The outdoor humidity is much lower in the winter than the summer CORRECTION: I misinterpreted the data. Mallorca is humid for most of the year. The relative humidity is higher in the spring, autumn and winter but the lower temperatures make people feel much more comfortable in those months. END

2. Measurements show that my indoor humidity is much lower in winter than summer (both when empty and shut up for weeks).
3. I suspect it might be a finca/ground floor/seafront salt/ thing rather than apartments.

Exactly. We looked at almost exclusively and houses and apartments for sale which were empty. The apartments were all cold and dry (and a bit drafty sometimes) whereas the houses always had damp patches.

Being a pair of complete suckers we bought the only house we saw which was inhabited - the owners were at home with their grandchildren and they had the oven on for lunch, the woodburner going in the living room etc etc...

If you leave an old house empty for the winter with inadequate ventilation then you'll come back in the spring and find large chunks of the paintwork downstairs peeling off or sat on the floor. It's all part of the fun!

Electricity is very expensive so for winter you need to make sure you rent somewhere with good insulation and a few neighbours bolted on either side (many older apartments we looked at were very basic construction). Our house has about 8ft wide walls front and rear but bulges in the middle so it's great for soaking heat out of the neighbours when I'm not there!!!

Having enjoyed the sun (and snow!!) for Sant Antoni last year and the gorgeous warm sunshine this year. I know where I would rather be in January!!
