WiFi Update

Hi all you fellow fans of PP

I am a newby to this site and I am already addicted, I was wondering if anybody has any updates of places offering wifi access this year. I have read all the posts made last year but as the industry moves so quickly I thought there maybe more places offering wifi this year, I'm sure all the bars would get plenty of customers if they provided this facility.

We have bought an apartment in the centre and it will be our first visit since we acquired the keys recently. We have bought a super small laptop about the same dimensions as a paperback book, with a 7 inch screen which has wifi installed, It's ideal to tuck into your hand luggage. We would like to use this to communicate back home and, of course, to keep up with the gossip on the forum! We thought about having a landline and broadband installed but as we will only be able to come over about 5 times a year we would be paying for something that we would not be using.

We are coming out beginning of April for a month and would welcome any advice and comments.

Hi, whaleywanderer

We (my wife and I) will be staying in Puerto Pollensa for a week starting tomorrow (Saturday 29th March) in an apartment somewhere on Pine Walk.

I'll be taking my Asus eeePC (sounds similar to what you have) and fully intend to explore all the wi-fi enabled cafes and bars (especially the bars ;) ). I'll report back here on what I find.

pollensa 28-03-2008 18:24

The only place that I know of is JKs - see http://www.puertopollensa.com/jks/ so it will be useful to hear if there any others. :)

whaleywanderer 29-03-2008 09:55

We are coming out next week and will do some scouting around. Will report back.

whaleywanderer 29-03-2008 10:39

Thanks Mike, yes you're right, I have also got the Asus Eee PC and I love it, so handy to carry around. I'm looking forward to using it in PP. We will be over for a month in April so may bump into you on our wifi hunt. Look out for me, mine is a white one.

mike 31-03-2008 19:52

JK's bar

I'm sitting in JK's bar while Mrs. mike is watching the soaps back in the apartment :)
No problems with wireless access - just ask for details at the bar.

sws97sdg 31-03-2008 19:57

so jealous of you mike, we visited JKs several times last year to use their wifi, very friendly people with great snacks, say hello to them from me, enjoy your drink!!

whaleywanderer 01-04-2008 10:07

Thanks Mike
What a good scout you are, we come out on Sunday and will head for JK's for a surf and snack, armed with my trusty Eee. Have a good time, hope the sun is shining for you.

mike 01-04-2008 12:57

Cafe Caramba

I've just braved a sand-blasting while walking along Pine Walk and up to Cafe Caramba . I hope the wind will die down for the rest of the week.

Still, the good news is that Cafe Caramba now supports wi-fi. It's not free, but (I suppose) the prices are reasonable.

whaleywanderer 01-04-2008 23:27

Thanks again Mike for all the info. How does Jk's compare with Cafe Caramba for ease of use and prices and of course congenial company and good food (and drink!)?

Access at JK's is free for customers; at Cafe Caramba they charge by connection time - I think it's in ten-minute units up to half an hour, then half-hour units, and so on.

The network at JK's is encrypted; you need to borrow the card with the access key from the bar. You should only need to enter the key once, the PC will "remember" it for future visits. The network at Caramba is open (no access key needed) so it's marginally easier to connect (but less secure) there than at JK's.

I haven't sampled the food at either place - but other customers looked happy enough.

Mariquita 02-04-2008 13:11

I noticed today that Fletchers is advertising free wifi access at their cafe. They are located off the sea front down the side street next to Burger King.

whaleywanderer 04-04-2008 10:27

Re Fletchers - This is good to know, our apartments just round the corner from there! It was up for sale last time we walked past, good to know it's opened up again.:)

mike 08-04-2008 21:36

Ho hum... I'm back home in the UK :( and didn't have an opportunity to check out the wi-fi at Fletcher's. It will be almost two months before we visit Spain (Costa Blanca next time) again.

While we were there, I did notice quite a few unsecured "home" networks. In fact, I had to switch wi-fi off when using the PC in the apartment where we were staying, to avoid connecting to a neighbour's network.

whaleywanderer 12-04-2008 13:27

Sitting in JK's, fabulous being able to use their free wifi.

Went into Fletchers bar to enquire about their wifi and although he has all the equipment he told me it would be a couple of days until he would be up and running with wifi. I will pop in a bit later and report back.:)

Sparky 12-04-2008 14:01

Hi whaley, if you are still there please say hello to Jane and Kev from the chewing gum people and tell them we will be out on 3rd May. Cheers.!!

Re Fletchers bar - They advertise wifi but they do not have wifi! Don't know if this is just a ploy to get people in! (we were there for a month)

There is another cafe just around the corner from Fletchers (on the front) called 'Luv Juice' they also advertise wifi but on enquiring they did not have it either, and funnily enough the guy that owns Fletchers was sitting having a drink in there!

See http://www.puertopollensa.com/intern...es.html#bondia - it's near the Pollensa Park hotel.

sws97sdg 09-05-2008 14:17

Thanks Pollensa know where it is now, we walk pass it everytime we have been to PP, you think I would remember it :o

whaleywanderer 19-07-2008 11:00

Hi to all communication geeks ;)

Just returned from PP and found a new WIFI source, Bony's bar in the square now have WIFI, pretty sure it's free for the price of a drink.

Has anybody else found anymore sources?

Rab 22-07-2008 09:05

Add Los Zarzales and Fletchers to the list.

Also to re-iterate JK's and makessar.

whaleywanderer 22-07-2008 10:00

Thanks for the info. Fletchers was advertising WIFI back in April, but never actually had it, do they actually have it now and if so is it free or timed by the minute?

Los Zarzales, this would be really handy for me but can you just have a drink or do you have to have a meal?

It's great to see more and more places are adding WIFI to their premises.

slipalong & lola 22-07-2008 17:03

Wi Fi

Hi Whaley. Add hotel Daina to your list. Used their wi fi back in June ,just bought a coffee and sat there doing our thing. No one asked for any money so must assume its free. We used it all week at no cost so good luck.

sws97sdg 11-08-2008 16:34

Also Bar Juma and cafe L'ille in the town.

gpm 11-08-2008 17:55

Hi gpm Where is Nicos please?

Sparky 11-08-2008 18:32

Hi Whaley, Nicos is in what used to be a hardware shop just off the square in the side street where Neptuno is.;)

whaleywanderer 19-08-2008 10:20

An article regarding WiFi availability appeared in yesterdays Daily Bulletin, stating that WiFi was being made available on the major tourist beaches in Majorca. Here is an extract that may be of interest:

'Alcudia and Son Servera have already begun setting up Wi-fi facilities on their beaches. Alcudia had its network up and running a month ago. The service offers 34 megabytes per second 24 hours a day.'

I wonder how long it will be before WiFi is freely available in PP?

Sparky 19-08-2008 10:31

Hi Whaley, that's very interesting. Perhaps Nick Barnard could ask the mayor if there are any plans for PP to get Wifi ;):D

Might be freely available, but not for free.

Alcudia beach is €17.95 for 500 minutes according the this blog post:
alcudiapollensa: Circle In The Sand

Also dont forget that public wifi is not usually very secure.

read about hamster and ferret etc, never log into anywhere important from some elses wifi, as you never know who is accessing the data.

whaleywanderer 20-08-2008 10:22

This makes interesting reading Mark, I wonder how many people realise how vulnerable they are when using Wifi but when on holiday it seems the ideal solution.

Re using your laptop on the beach - surely places in the same vicinity would be able to pick up the signal also.

Bit of a con advertising 'freely available Wifi' for a fee!

For the near future I will probably keep going to my local internet cafe until someone can convince me that Wifi is safe to use, without being hacked - but then I ask myself "How safe are internet cafe's"?

Any hacker near enough to a laptop connected to a wifi network could do his stuff, so could happen anywhere.

Also a risk from 'Evil Twin Attack' where a copy of a real wifi acces point is created on a laptop with wifi card etc ( hidden in a back pack) and people are lured into connecting to it while the hacker has a beer or coffee...

Depends if the internet cafe has key logger installed or not  :D

So be careful never to do any financial transactions or log into email accounts on anyone elses internet connection, as you never who is recording the data.

I always use a vodafone spain 3G data USB modem when on holiday.
Cheap enough and safe as there are no hacking tools that I am aware of.
This uses mobile phone network for data so you are connected directly to vodafone rather than a wifi hotspot.

(The reason I know all this stuff is that I run a few websites that take online card payments from our customers, so I am well aware of all the tricks the hackers get up to - I like to be one step ahead :D )

September 08 Update

Just returned from PP with my trusty little Asus eee pc (wonderful machine). I found the confort and convenience of the facilities in the Hotel Daina were superb. They offer free wifi, you just need to buy a drink and ask for the code, you can then surf for as long as you want. I found it pleasant in the reception area, sitting on the comfy sofa's. Drinks were reasonably priced also:D

More and more places seem to be offering wifi, anybody else found new ones this year?
