Default VoIP/Skype

Having got my lovely laptop and Vodaphone 3G card, I am trying to use it to make internet phone calls (ViOP). I have purchased a suitable USB handset, but fear that it is not possible over a Vodaphone (ES) 3G connection.

Has anyone else had any experience? On reading various articles on the web, it seems that it might not work because either vodaphone block skype calls, or that that the data lines are not sufficient to handle this type of traffic.None of these articles seems definative.

Hi Roy & Katie
ive been doing a bit of reading up on the subject, and its seems that you are right, you can't acess Skype over a Vodaphone 3G laptop connection!
Vodafone arnt actually saying why you cant, but its obviously something to do with them loosing alot of cash.
Have you tried any other VoIP, try Google talk or even MSN
I use Skype to talk to my brother in the USA, its brill.
good luck

Thanks for your comments everyone. We are really trying to cut done our mobile costs when calling back to the UK. Skype would have been ideal because you can dial landlines from it, whereas the others are, I think, computer to computer. Please correct me if I am wrong.

www.voipstunt.com you can call phone to phone via computer calls to Spain are Free as with many other countries set up call cost €0.05 about 3.5p all you need to do is to put €10 credit in your account and calls are free for 120 days you then put another €10 and so on.
To use you put your number in then the number you are calling inc 0044 then ring your phone rings you pick iy up it then is ringing you call number simple as that.
I use it to call my son in Canada its very good and clear you can also text and do computer to computer call or computer mic to phone mix and match.

Hey Snowy, this looks very promising. I will try it out when I come across in 10 days time. I have looked at the website and please correct me if I have understood it correctly. With your computer you input your number and also the number you are want to dial. Then you hit "call". Next your phone rings and when you answer your phone is already ringing the number you wish to dial. Is it really that simple? If it is then Wow! Just hope it works with 3G

Snowy,
I am not sure whether I was just lucky when I looked at the website the other day, but when I returned to it today it seemed to just give details of many different companies offering voip. Which one do you use?

Snowy,

Sorry if I appeared thick, but I must have mistyped the web address. Instead of typing "voipstunt.com" I typed "viopstunt.com" and got the website as I described. There is also a website called "voipstut.com. They all host similar things, which is a bit naughty.

I am with you now and will try it next week. Thanks for your patience Snowy!
