Default Spanish Pay as You Go Sim Cards

Off to PP next weekend We travel to Spain at least twice a year and thought it wise to purchase a Spanish Pay as You Go SIM card for our mobiles whilst there?

My friend, who is Mallorquin, suggested a Movistar SIM, anyone had any experience of buying one in PP?

Is there any advice anyone living there can offer?

I bought a complete phone with movistar sim a few years ago & use that when I'm out there (am actually there now but go home tomorrow) which I bought in Carrefour. The key thing is to remember to top it up every 6 months or it stops working & I think you lose the number after 9 months.

you can buy a sim in the UK from 0044 see puertopollensa.com/holiday-shopping.html#mobiles

Default spanish pay as you go sim cards

The perfect solution for me would be a spanish Pay As You Go laptop internet card - the card you plug into a USB port which gives you internnet connection without needing a wi-fi router.

I installed WiFi in the house last year then realised it was costing me an absolute fortune every month for the limited number of weeks (4/5?) we visit each year. I keep kiddding myself I can run my business from PP whilst I'm out there. So I want easy internet access without having to go to an internet cafe (don't think there are any near Bellresguard???).

Tried to talk to Telefonica, but BIG language problem. (ie I don't speak it!!!!)

Probably searching in vain for the perfect solution, and will almost certainly have to revert to the expensive constantly 'on' wi-fi route but would be eternally grateful if anyone has any ideas.

Thanks

Graham

See this thread p221.ezboard.com/fpollensaforumfrm19.showMessage?topicID=29.topic for info on using a 3G card. I don't think it'll work out much cheaper than ADSL but is an alternative. Let us know how you get on.

Have also just come across www.spainsim.com/mobileconnect.htm which offers a PAYG 3G card plus modem if required. Might be more appropriate for occasional visits.

I am a bit late to reply, but for the record we use a Vodaphone 3G card bought from Vodaphone in Alcudia. It works on a 3G or GPRS connection which is readily available in PP. It is almost as fast as broadband. The card plugs into the PC1A slot on the laptop.
We pay a monthly fee of €39 which is is their most expensive charge. In hindsight we should have opted for the lowest fee of €19 as we don't download enough to justify the higher charge.

Carolina in Vodaphone Alcudia speaks good English.

We also bought a cheap pay as you go mobile for about €40. You need to make one call every 3 months to keep the line open.

Vodaphone is situated almost opposite where the market is held on the main road, not far from the traffic lights.

Meant to say I bought a Movistar sim for 26 euro which comes with €10 of free calls in Reus Electrodomesticos. As its says above you have to remember to top it up every six months, which I have my Mallorcan pal do for me.

I bought a pay as you go sim to use in one of my old mobiles but then found it was cheaper and more convenient to use my English mobile (I get a international traveller tarrif included in my contract, and I think most networks provide this for a small charge). By the time I'd told everyone at home my new number it didn't seem worth the hastle and the calls/ texts were more expensive to make than from my UK mobile.
