Broadband from Movistar

Hi,

My wife and i have just bought in Gotmar.

I need to work from there and so need really good broadband.

Back in Dec, Movistar told us we could get 300mgs, but they haven't managed to lay the cable up to our place.

Any one else dealt with them over an issue like this.

If they don't deliver, what is the best way to get a high quality, fast internet connection?

All help much appreciated.

Chris

Hi Chris,

We are in process of upgrading to fibre with Movistar.

Firstly the speed of 300 Mb/s that they quote is the upload speed. The download speed is 30Mb/s which is still fast but their advertising is slightly misleading.

They installed cable in our street a few months ago, but we have had a problem with them not being able to find the cable in our garden. We have now provided a new conduit so they should be able to connect us when we are out next month. (The fibre cable needs to go from the house to the box in the street). Currently we are getting 2Mb/s, which allows us to do most things including iplayer (this sometimes freezes but for the most part works OK). The cost of the new fibre contract is actually less than our existing contract.

If there is not fibre in your street then you need to get your neighbours to request it, and once there are enough requests then they should install it.

Once there is cable in your street then their response is very good - coming out next day.

There are satellite alternatives for a fast speed, but they are expensive. Movistar is the best option if you can get them to lay a cable.

Hi
We had Movistar fibre optic installed in our apartment in November! I have to say it is superb. Yes a little more pricey but super fast, no buffering when watching films etc. I would highly recommend

We live on the new bypass that goes through Gotmar, I believe the main cable was laid several months ago. Our problem was that they had to run a cable into our apartment block. I enquired in the Movistar shop and was told that they are out there running cables everyday, lo and behold 2 weeks ago 2 technicians arrived to run the cable into our apartments. All I need to do now is telephone them and request connection. Hopefully a good result.

Thanks for that all.

We are in Cel Gotmar and i have no idea if anyone else has cable/fibre.

Will have to find out when i'm out in April.

We live in Bellauba opposite and have had Fibre Optic since September. I am sure they have worked across in Cel Gotmar too. There is a specialist dept . Call Adela Cabello 618324129 and she will be able to help you.

Whoooo - just had fibre installed today and can get 100Mb/s download speed and 30 Mb/s upload speed - over wifi!

Interestingly the engineer connected the movistar router to our existing TP-Link router, as a bridge, which he said that it would give better wifi speeds in the house rather than using the movistar one.

No complaints it works really well.

I am a happy chappie

We just had it installed today as well.

Our Estate Agent who oversaw it, tested it and said it was "off the scale".

We are out next week and will be trying it out.

Over on the 18th April to have it installed and to upgrade to smart TV. Has anyone signed up for Netflix, I understand it is now available in Mallorca?

Be careful with your choice of Smart TV if you want to use Filmon to watch BBC. We have a Samsung smart TV (7 series I think, certainly not the basic one) and can't seem to get Filmon to work. It works fine on our ipad. By browsing the net it seems there can be a problem with Filmon and Samsung TV's. There is no Samsung app for filmon where there is one for netflix.

We can get it by connecting our ipad to the TV by cable, but it would be nicer not to have to do it.

It you already have an ADSL router it might be worth piggybacking it to the Movistar router. By doing this with our TP Link router we increased the download speed on wifi from 30Mb/s to 100Mb/s. This was on the advice of the Movistar engineer.Apparently the Movistar router has a wifi limit of 30Mb/s.

However 30Mb/s is fast enough for vitually everything.

If you do want to piggy back the routers then you will need a special cable that looks like an ethernet cable but has more connection pins. Not sure what it is called,
