Just back from our 6th visit to the
Playa Mar.The reception has a had a refurb and now have lovely cool white leather sofas, sleek lines and looks great.
The old entertainment room has been knocked through to the dining room and this is now a large open plan dining area. The decor is bleached white wood with stunning damson/plum coloured surfaces - similar self service as before but now some areas are for show cooking such as steaks etc.
The new 3 storey bulding is at the back of the complex - where the tennis court used to be and is now an emormous entertainment block with a large stage. The seating at the moment is not great - rows of seats then tables and chairs further back extending out onto the larger terrace. (The word is that this will be changed soon to make it more informal) The down side is there were a lot of children running around even when the proffesional acts were on later in nthe evening. Part of this building is the new larger kids club which opens up onto the childrens play area - much better in my opinion.
The new spa and indoor pool is located under this building but is not open yet - should be by July! The top floor is to be a gym not sure when this will be open. Work is ongoing on this building but the disruption didnt affect our enjoyment.
The large deep pool has now gone and has been replaced by a smart area for more sunbeds ( a shame really as our children have now got to the stage where they loved this pool for diving ect)
One massive change is the addition by the
hotel - not Thomsons of a huge crab creature nicknamed Coolio! which incorporates 3 slides aimed at children aged 6 -13 years - I can see this being a problem in the busier months when it will be difficult to monitor who is on it! and a slightly smaller cow/toucon aimed at smaller children with smaller slides. When we first saw them (at night) we really didnt like them in fact my daughter really has a phobia about things like that but after a while depending on where you sit they were not an issue for us in fact both children enjoyed going on them.
The hotel staff and entertainment staff are brilliant nothing is too much trouble, even though we arrived at 11.30pm and things were closing for the eve the waiter rustled up some sandwiches for us.
The rooms are really no different to last year apart from a lick of paint, but to be honest at the price we paid we expected no more. You can now go all inclusive at this hotel but there seemed to be a mix of families doing this and some seft catering. For me it would be a crime not to have the chance to visit the wonderful restaurants in the Port.
We love this hotel but we always go in May -not sure if it would be the same in the summer hols.
