Today 2nd Jan its just over 1.23

What are you using to only get 1.1799?

pollensa 02-01-2013 23:44

Hi Gorden, I did the rounds of the shops in town and that was the general rate in M&S, Travel shops and money shops. Did you mean the visa euro rate which was over 1.23 yesterday, the rate the banks use, if you have a commission free card that would be a brilliant rate for withdrawals

El Gordo 03-01-2013 10:03

Hi SWS

Yes, that was the Bank rate.

These commission free cards are worth having if you are abroad a lot. :D

Just thought I would confirm the source.

Thanks

For those with an Ipad or IPhone or even perhaps any android phone there's a brilliant app called 'XE Currency'. It shows the live bank rate plus graphs of movements over day, week or month. You can also use it to work out your exchange rate. You can put as many countries in as you like. I check every morning after my daily visit to the forum what the to rate is doing.

sws97sdg 03-01-2013 13:39

Thanks Whaley, off to the app store as I type!

Tonsyl 15-02-2013 09:26

Just done the rounds and the best rate I found was online with ICE, with free postage for next working day delivery.

suemo 24-03-2013 11:28

Just wondered if anyone had used these online services before and if so which one? I was just wondering how safe and trustworthy they are. As you know the exchange rate is not great at the moment but ICE are offering the best and you get an even better rate if you change over a certain amount which we would be doing as we pay for our accommodation in euro's on arrival.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Suemo x

Tonsyl 24-03-2013 12:55

We have used ICE 3 or 4 times now and they are very reliable. Order one day and delivery the next working day by registered post. Their rates are usually good too and we have been very happy with their service.

cumberland8 24-03-2013 19:12

I use ICE every month to buy furniture etc in Europe as most suppliers will only deal in cash, they consistently give the best rates in the UK, also anything under 5k can be collected from Waterloo Station if you live in the Smoke at the best rates.
No I don't work for them either.

Great Dane 24-03-2013 21:15

I use a caxton fx visa eurocard, exchange rate I received on Friday was 1.15 plus no ATM withdrawal charges.Easy just to transfer funds from your bank account to the card and easy to keep track of your spending.

Not something you necessarily want to be doing while on hols:(. Rather spoils the enjoyment of evening cocktails on the Illa d'Or terrace. Wait till your back home and the nights start drawing in. Fingers crossed enough time then to sort the plastic card things out before decisions on next years visit have to be made.:)

joey36 25-03-2013 17:54

Travel FX 1.1640 now.

Latest Exchange Rates

The wife and I have now hit the stage where we can say "next month we will be in PP", so we are starting to look at the GBP to Euro exchange rate to try and get the best deal possible.

I was wondering what deals were happening locally in PP to see if its best waiting till we are there or shopping around locally in the UK first. Can anyone advise on what the local exchange rate is please.

Cheers

Kev

ragdollabbi 02-08-2013 08:06

I think the exchange rates are all very similar at the minute......unless you are changing mega money;) A slight variation here and there is not really going to make much difference to the normal traveller and it doesn't matter where you go you are always going to see a better rate somewhere else afterwards aren't you.....it's sods law:)

pescador2009 02-08-2013 13:34

If the rate goes up, say from 1.12 to 1.13 E to the pound (approx. as it is about now) you need to change about 900 (about 1000E) to get an extra 10E (about 9). This is just an indication - IF I have got my maths right. Hard to believe it went up to 1.25E to the pound (tourist rate) for a few days during last winter!
Never a good time to buy unless you are an Astrologer or a Banker and even they get it wrong most of the time! Good luck, you'll just have to 'go-for-it' soon.

sws97sdg 19-09-2013 16:44

Just got 1.1553 on the high street, bonus!! :):):)

ragdollabbi 19-09-2013 17:10

I got 1.1696 on Saturday when I put euros on a prepaid card for my son:) Wish I had got mine then too:rolleyes:

varsp 19-09-2013 18:32

We always manage to time it wrong, and end up getting a less than great exchange rate. Although most Bureau de Change will at least match comparative rates, if not better them with a little bartering !

CathB 19-09-2013 18:51

Local travel agents offering 1.17 and this is being bettered by Ramsdens and another place..getting 1.173

sws97sdg 20-09-2013 06:33

Wow, that's even better! :)

sws97sdg 20-09-2013 11:17

The Visa exchange rate is at this today, also great!! :) :)
1 POUND STERLING = 1.186950 EURO

sws97sdg 24-12-2013 14:57

Not much change in the rate, 1.159 today just in town! Not bad I suppose!

romanb 24-12-2013 16:31

I managed to get around 1.189 few weeks ago and I received a 5 gift voucher to spend in Debenhams, I checked on money supermarket for the best rate and you had to print off a voucher to take with you to Debenhams, plus you received a higher rate if you were a Debenhams card holder. Its worth checking the comparison sites. Once when we visited a few years back we received less than 1 euro to the pound so for it to be back at nearly 1.20 makes a big difference.

sws97sdg 07-01-2014 18:10

1.176 today in town, going the right way :)
Euro visa exchange rate is 1.21 today, even better for cash withdrawals overseas

Nick 07-01-2014 21:32

What town is that and how/where on earth do you get these rates? Couple of weeks ago I could only get 1.13 in my town's local banks.

Please let me into your secret!

ragdollabbi 07-01-2014 21:36

Try some of the loan/cheque cashing shops...not sure if I can mention names here. We have always found them to have some of the best rates around:) In fact I'm sure I saw around 1.17 recently in one of them;)

ragdollabbi 07-01-2014 21:38

Yes, one of them advertising 1.1713 online today:D Another one advertising 1.1754

sws97sdg 07-01-2014 21:54

Mine was a cheque centre, I know you can get better on line and if you collect, I just like to do it with cash and get it there and then!

CathB 07-01-2014 23:33

Just upgraded our Nationwide current account to FlexPlus which, as part of the package, allows fee free cash withdrawals overseas. So looking forward to visa rates when in PP this August.

Dunk 08-01-2014 11:04

Just booked car hire, villa etc for this year in July/August, booked in Euros so been checking rates. Asda 1.178 Sainsburys 1.178, Tesco 1.174 all with free delivery if order over 500.
I also have a link to a interesting blog which is run by a foreign currency trader that gives his thoughts on the direction of the euro throughout the year. (although this is commercial rates, its a good indication)Dont think Im allowed to put it here but if anyone interested Im happy to send privately, current commercial rates are 1.207.

Nick 08-01-2014 12:22

Great, useful replies here as always from forum members. Looks like the Nationwide is good then? get a FlexPlus account and put some money in it before going out to PP then withdraw it from the bank.

Will the local bank make a charge though?

joey36 08-01-2014 17:50

TravelFX are giving 1.19 at the moment.Free delivery over 500.

No, not usually machines are free like in the UK

STOXIE 08-01-2014 21:17

Santander also do not charge for withdrawls from their cashpoint in the centre if you have a Santander account.

Understand its the same basis as their visa credit card - no fees on either. You get the daily visa exchange rate, which on past experience is invariably higher than any other consumer means of exchange. The Fairfx cash card has become redundant.

Plus, UK and foreign car breakdown cover with Britannia Rescue for two cars, saving the 60 I was paying direct, for one car.

Looks a good deal unless I've been reeled in by the marketing people!

sws97sdg 13-05-2014 08:27

Its going up, got 1.1866 in town and todays Visa Euro exchange rate is 1.00 BRITISH POUND = 1.23 EURO :)

Gommar Goffer 13-05-2014 10:18

Just transferred money to my PP account via Smart Currency and got 1.1945
