Big Black Bee!

When we were out in May and sitting on our roof terrace admiring the new pergola that hubby had just erected, we were alarmed by the presence of a large black bee, fortunately he did not seem interested in us but more by the pergola. We watched him for about an hour, he would fly off and always return to land on the same piece of wood, where he would stay for about 10 minutes. Our curiosity got the better of us and whilst he was not there we went to investigate - there was a hole in the wood about 1/2" in diameter and about as deep - yes, he had been eating our pergola:eek: The only thing to hand was some washing liquid, which we smeared all round the area to try and discourage him, he did not seem keen to return and I kept smiling to myself when picturing this bee blowing bubbles:D

On our return to the UK I checked on the internet and found that this black bee, which was approx 2" inches long, was in fact called a carpenter bee and is so named because they make holes in untreated wood to lay their eggs. Hopefully the liquid soap will deter him until our next visit, when we can get some wood preserver on, I hope we don't find a pile of sawdust on our return:eek:

Fascinating! We too have seen these huge black bees whilst out in PP and they scared me to death!

Funnily enough, last night as we were sitting in the garden, a wasp was trying to do the same thing to a wooden garden chair! I think I prefer the wasp though!
