Default Flying beasties

You kill what you fear and you fear what you don't understand.

A line I remember from a song by Genesis. The line popped back into my mind as I tried to pluck up the courage to catch a large flying beastie which my cat had brought in and released in the lounge. There appears to be an increase in the number of large flying beasties in the garden lately so I decided to do a bit of research into what threat they might pose.

The Mammoth Wasp
This is the one the cat brought in. It is the largest wasp in Europe. 6cm long, black body with two stripes which on some separate into four yellow spots. It might look scary but it is non-aggressive and only uses its sting to paralyse its prey.

The Violet Carpenter Bee
We get allot of these in the garden. The size of a large bumble bee. Black body (no yellow markings) with wings that flash iridescent in the sun. They have a sting which they use only in defense. They are not aggressive so leave them alone to go about their business.

The Mud Dauber
Last week I found one of these building a nest on a cushion in the bedroom. They are about 3cm long, yellow and black, with an extremely slender waist. They rarely sting and are not aggressive.

The three above might look big and scary but it is the mosquitoes that are the real threat here !!!!
Sparky, lollipop, car77 and 4 others like this.
