Default Calling all Entomologists

Can anyone out there help me identify a large friendly insect that visits me every morning to spend a few minutes banging its head against the patio door before giving up only to return the next day to try again.
It is about 35-40mm long, black, except for two yellow bands around the centre of the abdoman. I´ve trawled through hundreds of images of bees, wasps and hornets but without success.
