Ryanair loses court case

We were 'stranded' for an extra three days in Puerto Pollensa due to the volcanic ash. :D

You could hardly call it a hardship - so we won't be claiming!

It's nice to know that others who were really put out can though.

Good outcome for those people who where affected by it.

Ryanair showing it's true colours (again) in having people (other companies call them customers) go to court to get their rightful compensation.

Unfortunately it will likely result in another levy/charge/fee by Ryanair to line their pockets.

I have considerable sympathy for the situation faced by the airlines. We have come to expect low fares to travel around the world - Indeed many of us on the forum probably only use "budget carriers".

To pay perhaps £150 for a flight and then expect to be able to claim potentially unlimited expenses incurred due to an incident that is completely outside their control seems completely unfair. They will now have to put funds aside to deal with and insure against such incidents, and this has to be paid for somehow.

I think that to suggest that Ryanair or any other airline will use this to "line their pockets" shows a total misunderstanding of the consequences of this decision.

Airlines are subject to external auditing, and they will have to be able to demonstrate that they have access to sufficient funds to survive potentially crippling claims. What happens for instance if the volcano were to erupt again trapping passengers for weeks?

As it stands, the outcome of this court case is that every passenger will have to pay more to use any airline.

Surely a fairer way would be for the airlines to be only reponsible for things that they can be responsible for, with passenger's own travel insurance being upgraded to cover such situations.

That way, we can still choose to use budget airlines, but decision as to whether we choose to cover ourselves in-case we get stranded is our own?
