Have to agree with most of the comments on here. Winter flights are getting more and more scarce and those that do operate are charging extortionate fares.

I'm trying to get out over New Year and use Stansted, which is normally no problem atall with Ryan Air, but hardly any availability now.

It's a difficult situation for the airlines and the customers now. This recession is getting out of hand in the UK.

Even the Yanks are pulling out of the recession already !!

Have flown from Bristol on Boxing Day last few years for a few days between shifts. (usually work Christmas day and New Year!), No flights this year on Boxing day so flying to Malaga instead, shame as would have preferred Pollensa

Default "winter" flights

I have queried the situation regarding Flybe flights from Southampton to Palma in 2012 today.

I've always used them for the first trip to Palma in the Spring.

Disappointingly, they have decided not to commence flights until 27th May 2012, thereby missing all of the Easter traffic and also the early May Bank holiday too. How very strange!

At least Ryanair have commenced their flights from Bournemouth from the beginning of April, so I can get back to see the family for Easter. But Thomsonfly were only offering one flight a week!

That is unbelievable isn't it Lorenzo and they stop before the end of September , i just looked at the Exeter schedule and they start around 25th March but also finish in September.

I'm trying to organise winter flights from Newcastle . We no longer have flights to Gatwick! The best I can come up with is to fly Easyjet to Bristol and onwards to Palma. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You could do Newcastle > Barcelona > Palma as an alternative. We have flights out in Jan from £20.99 and returns from £12.99. Either stay in Barca for a few hours/day and get the short hop over to Palma with any of the regionals.

An option for a direct flight is Liverpool airport which is about a 3 hour drive from Newcastle and Easyjet have winter flights although they are often early flight times so not ideal if you have a long drive to the airport.
Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK to Liverpool John Lennon Airport - Google Maps

Maybe stay the night before in one of the hotels near the airport as the prices are reasonable.
easyJet Hotels - Powered by LateRooms.com

This new hotel is just outside the terminal building, cross the road to check in
Hampton by Hilton Liverpool/John Lennon Airport - Hotels in Liverpool - Hilton International

The Barcelona option does look very reasonably priced if hand luggage only.

We also fly Alicante from Newcastle but flights tend to be a little more expensive. Really depends if you want to spend some time in Gatwick/Barcelona or Alicante. Also keep an eye on various other websites, as for example, we link in with Barcelona Metro for free travel from the airport into the centre and back.

Thank you for suggestions. Barcelona looks good and a short stay over would be interesting!

We have flown via Barcelona on two occasions once staying in Barcelona on the journey home, the other time when we flew with Iberia to Heathrow just as a stopover. Can also recommend travelling via Barcelona as an alternative, its a huge airport with lots of shops and eating places our stopover gap of an hour was too short. When we stopped overnight the lower flight cost to Barcelona and then the short internal flight worked out as cheap with the overnight in Barcelona centre as the return flights to Palma from London.

I use Barcelona many many times during the year when flying to and from the USA to Palma and its a great airport probably one of the best if you have to be there for a few hours lots and lots of shops etc and for those who still like a smoke there is an outdoor smoking area without having to leave the Airport and come back through security.
