Latest news from todays papers.
The economy and the General Strike dominate the papers in Spain today El Mundo leads with the headline that unemployment will not fall in 2011, according to INEM, the Spanish Employment Agency budgets. It will spend 30.14 billion in subsidies and benefits, just 1.5% less than this year. The paper says the number of unemployed will be the same as there will be fewer people getting benefit but more the subsidy. Madrid is imposing minimum services which are double the national numbers for the day of the General Strike, September 29, according to El Mundo. It notes Valencia has followed the national agreement. El País headlines that the PP regions are ‘agitating the strike’ with higher minimum services. La Razón has a photo of the two union leaders Méndez and Toxo with their backs to the camera. It was taken at a rally in Málaga yesterday. ‘With their backs to reality’ is the caption with the paper noting the minimum services agreement presented now as ‘historic’ when the same deal was rejected in 2002. Publico leads with a Publiscopio opinion poll on the General Strike which concludes that most Spaniards think there are motives for the strike, but there is little motivation to follow it. 54.6% say there are motives for the strike, but 67.1% say they will not be following it. In fact only 18% say they will take strike action, with the main reason for the apathy being that they think it will not achieve anything. |
We flew back from Palma last Thursday, 23rd September, and the only problem we had, due to the French air traffic controllers strike, was a 90 minute delay sitting in the plane on the tarmac. The pilot informed us that we would fly over Belgium instead.
No probs really. |
We also flew back on Thursday 23rd, into Manchester with Monarch. We incurred a 4hr delay and we also had to sit on the plane for 11/2hr before going anywhere (numb bum by the time we reached our destination:eek:). Not sure what route the pilot took though once in the air.
It could have been a lot worse and I really feel for the poor people that were delayed for days earlier on in the year due to the ash cloud. |
We also flew back on Thursday and experienced a 6 1/2 hour delay !!!! I think the later in the day the flight is scheduled, the longer the delay as problems build up. It's also worth noting that delays were the tip of the iceberg as many flights were cancelled. Chatting to one couple who had their gatwick flight cancelled and had moved onto our Luton Flight , the next flight to gatwick they were offered was this coming Tuesday !! In short if you are flying on the day of the strike beware !!!!
|
Wow! That wasnt good for you - hadnt realised you had had problems. Its obviously the thing to try and get Gatwick passengers back via Luton if at all possible as thats what they did to sons girlfriend. Next available Gatwick flight was 4 days later.
Have had a message from easyjet today advising about ongoing and coming strikes - now that we are home! |
We flew in for a quick visit on Thursday Morning .... very early flight but spent 21/2 hours on the tarmac at Manchester Airport ........ annoyed at the time but once I had eaten Tapas; drank Vina Sol and savoured the view ( despite not the best weather ) .... and learned that we had fared better than most ...... I was chilled

Does anyone know if there are any strikes planned for October 9th or 16th ?
Having to re-arrange our 2nd october visit due to a little accident with a carving knife and knowing my luck I will pay to change flights dates to a strike date...... Mark. |
Please tell me that there are no strikes planned for either 9th or 15th as that is when we will be travelling:confused:

Latest news from the papers ahead of tomorrows general strike
The General Strike in Spain is tomorrow and El Mundo headlines that the unions have started making threats, fearing a failure. In Asturias ‘convincing and informative pickets have been announced’, in the Canaries the unions warned of the ‘serious risk’ for children who go to school, in Cataluña ‘it will not be a normal day’, and in Madrid ‘minimum services will not be guaranteed’. El Mundo also notes that the Royal Family has suspended all their events on the day. El País says that Zapatero wants a closer deal with the UGT and CCOO unions on labour reform, and the Prime Minister wants to discuss the matter after the strike. The paper notes the two union leaders, Toxo and Méndez, have described the conciliatory tactic from the Government as ‘crude’. ABC says the unions have linked the success of the strike to the lock down of Madrid, and notes that they are not guaranteeing minimum services in the capital. The paper notes too that the Prime Minister has offered talks on the day after. La Razón says that the unions have snubbed the Government, and that CCOO and UGT will not attend a meeting on the 2011 budgets called for today. The paper notes that the CEOE employers’ organisation fears the action of flying pickets. It’s that voiced claim which has led to the headline in Público which says the employers have set the strike on fire. It notes that the CEOE president has said that if participation levels are high it will be because of the actions of the pickets or insufficient minimum services fixed by the Government. and more here Countdown to Spain's General Strike underway The stoppage takes place on Wednesday September 29 The countdown to Wednesday’s General Strike in Spain is underway, with union activists busy distributing leaflets to work places and stickers and placards to members. UGT leader, Cándido Méndez, has said he is convinced the strike will be successful, and that demonstrations called on the day will be massively attended. However the President of the employers’ organisation, CEOE, Gerardo Díax Ferran, said that workers would not be working because they did not want to, rather because they were being stopped from doing so by pickets or the level of minimum services. He said the strike is ‘incongruous, inappropriate, unnecessary, useless and harmful’ for Spaniards in General but for workers in particular. Meanwhile, the unions have declined to meet with the Minister for Tax and Economy, Elena Salgado, on Tuesday, the day before the stoppage, after she requested a conversation on the budgets for 2011. UGT and CCOO responded by saying she was ‘taking the Mickey’ and the invitation was ‘a manoeuvre of manipulation’. Internet polls continue to show a majority of Spaniards saying that they will not follow the strike call. Minimum transport services are now established across the different regions of the country, and most airlines have published details of the flights that will be running on their webpages |
