Default Pocket the savings and reduce luggage charges

Keep It Under Your Coat.
I think this subject has come up before on this forum, but I thought I would just draw your attention to an article in yesterday’s Observer, from which I have ‘borrowed’ most of these details!

Generally, flying with a low-cost airline normally means exorbitant luggage charges. With Ryanair, (surprise, surprise,) the lowest of the low-cost airlines, charging the most. They now charge £40 per-bag for a return trip.

Recently, because of such hidden extras, airlines are seeing an increase in what are called ‘layer players,’ people who actually wear most of there holiday clothes. They use ‘poacher coats’, multi-pocketed jackets, whose sole aim is to carry as much as possible without actually putting it in your suitcase. Such coats, according to Debenhams, have increased by about200% in the last few weeks. And even parka jackets, by John Rocha, have increased by as much as 350%. They can be used to carry everything from pants, knickers, socks and t-shirts etc. Specially designed for use on airlines, and hoping to avoid the high luggage charges, is a jacket with more than 45 pockets!!!
Also, hand luggage, where there is no weight restriction, should be used to carry such things as cameras, books, shoes and medications.

Another sensible suggestion, from a Lastminute.com spokeman, says using lightweight luggage rather than the older, heavier suitcases can also reduce baggage expenses.
Food for thought, I think. Every little helps.
Tony.

Yes, CD, we've got your number. Your days are numbered. Watch out next time you check in as Michelin man.

I have a big winter jacket from this company in USA
Travel Clothing & Innovative Wrinkle-Free Travel Clothes (Jackets, Vest & more Clothing for Travel) - SCOTTEVEST/SeV, Scott Jordan Founder & CEO, Pocket Clothing for Travel Accessories and Travel Gear

A friend who is a press photographer uses them to sneak camers into places where cameras are not welcome, which is why I bought one

Expensive and not really very stylish.

I can sneak a big SLR camera with big lens, laptop, chargers, phone and chargers, just about everything in.

Very embarassing at airport security when the conveyor belt stops and goes back and forward a few times as they have a good look at what is in it...

Only used it once on a winter holiday.. and in UK to sneak something into a hospital to help a friend in need..

Would like the shorts and maybe the waistcoat..

I have this one: ( that is not me though !!)

Trousers, the shorts have the same pockets.

That is amazing, if you can get that much in a jacket how much will the winter coat hold .

No doubt the airlines will soon be onto this and will start confiscating stuff - how long will it take, I wonder? Or the next thing, people will be weighed as they check in. I'd put a bet on that happening soon, especially with Ryanair...

What happens to all these coats etc, when people take their seats? Do they clog up the overhead lockers even more? Along with all the extra hand luggage?

I find it hilarious the lengths some people will go to try and save a few bob! If you turn up to a check-in for Palma, at the height of summer dressed as if your about to embark on a Everest expedition then i think you'll be easily rumbled. The people who try it might be chuffed with themselves, but what about the comfort/safety of their fellow passengers?

What's next, declaring yourself as freight and travelling in the cargo hold!

When we go over next week i'll probably just pay for the one case, this plus the hand-luggage gives us 35kg, plenty! Anyway, Let's not lose track of the fact the air-ticket costs peanuts.

not that i go to the scottevest lengths to ensure i can travel hand luggage only but as previous posts will tell you i do make every effort not to take a case BUT my main motivator is time i can go from my front door to apartment in just over 4hrs with hand luggage only so with the help of early flights i can leave home at 6AM in the morning and breakfast on the pine walk ......
